Blog 3: Globalrefininggroup.com CATALYTIC CONVERTER: A WONDER DEVICE In 1950s, Mr. Eugene Houdry, A French Engineer, invented the first catalytic converter in order to reduce the quantity of pollution being ejected out by smokestacks. Catalytic converters were originally invented for factories rather than cars. Catalytic converter converts hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides into nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen and water. Catalytic Converter is attached to the vehicles in order to convert the poisonous gases produced by internal combustion engine into less deadly fumes. Converters are green devices from top to bottom in the sense that even the scrap catalytic converters can be used effectively for benefits. In fact, the environment-friendliness of this device is evident from the fact that catalytic converter recycling is successfully and commercially possible. A lot of research is being done for developing cost-effective Catalytic Converters that uses 75-85% less rhodium, platinum and palladium. The core of this technology is using ceramic particles with these precious metal embedded into it. This allows more surface area which ensures the catalyst to be more effective. The more freely the exhaust gases pass out of the pipes, the more torque and horsepower your engine can produce. It is the responsibility of the citizens to respect and implement the rules & regulations in compliance with the country, state or national laws. Catalytic Converter is really significant for those countries where air pollution is a major concern. Air pollution control, recyclability and function of a catalytic converter are all unique and simple in nature. This invention has changed the way the world sees automobiles today.
