  1. Baptism Does Not Save Us

  2. God Wants A People • "And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth… (Acts 17:26a) • And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7)

  3. God Wants A People Who Obey Him • “…I am the Father, Where is My honor? And if I am a Master, Where is My reverence? Says the LORD of hosts To you priests who despise My name. Yet you say, 'In what way have we despised Your name?' "You offer defiled food on My altar. But say, 'In what way have we defiled You?' By saying, 'The table of the LORD is contemptible.' And when you offer the blind as a sacrifice, Is it not evil? And when you offer the lame and sick, Is it not evil? Offer it then to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you favorably?" Says the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 1:6-8 NKJV)

  4. God Wants A People Who Obey Him From the Heart • Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis 1:26-27 NKJV)

  5. God Wants A People Who Obey Him From the Heart • And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. (Genesis 5:3 NKJV)

  6. God Wants A People Who Obey Him From the Heart • "so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; (Acts 17:27 NKJV)

  7. God Wants A People Who Obey Him From the Heart • and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:24 NKJV) • and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, (Colossians 3:10 NKJV)

  8. Baptism does not save us… • …baptism ALONE does not save us. • “Baptism” – was not translated, but was transliterated from Gk. “baptitzo” • Took Gk. letters B (Beta), P (Pi), and S (Sigma) to create a new English word: • B.P...S. = Baptism • meaning “to immerse, dip or plunge” • Correct translation: “Immerse”

  9. Baptism does not save us… • …baptism ALONE does not save us. • "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Matthew 28:19 NKJV) • “in the name of” = WITH THE AUTHORITY OF

  10. Baptism does not save us… • …Even BAPTIZED BELIEVERS MAY NOT BE SAVED! • Then Simon himself also believed; and when he was baptized... (Acts 8:13 NKJV) • …when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit." (Acts 8:18-19) • But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! "You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. "Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.” (Acts 8:20-22 NKJV)

  11. Baptism does not save us… • …Even BAPTIZED BELIEVERS MAY NOT BE SAVED! • But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! "You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right in the sight of God. "Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.” (Acts 8:20-22 NKJV)

  12. Baptism does not save us… • …if it was not done in the proper manner. • Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you. (1 Timothy 4:16 NKJV)

  13. Baptism does not save us… • …if it was not done in the proper manner. • "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Matthew 28:19 NKJV) • And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." (Acts 19:3 NKJV)

  14. Baptism does not save us… • …if it is not done from the heart. • Jewish males identifiable via circumcision (Gen. 17:11) • Not all physically circumcised Jews were saved: • Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. (Romans 10:1 NKJV)

  15. Baptism does not save us… • …if it is not done from the heart. • All SPIRITUAL JEWS will be saved • For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God. (Romans 2:28-29)

  16. Baptism does not save us… • …if it is not done from the heart. • Abraham: Our Spiritual Father Of Faith: • Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. How then was it accounted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised. And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had while still uncircumcised… (Romans 4:9-13)

  17. Baptism does not save us… • …if it is not done from the heart. • All Who Have Faith Are Abraham’s Children by Faith: • For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:27-29)

  18. Baptism does not save us… • …if it is not done from the heart. • Christians are identifiable through a parallel physical action: • In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. (Colossians 2:11-12 NKJV)

  19. Baptism does not save us… • …if it is not done from the heart. • Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters. (1 Corinthians 7:19 NKJV)

  20. Baptism does not save us… • …if one leaves the Lord. • And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, (Hebrews 5:9 NKJV)

  21. Baptism does not save us… • …if one leaves the Lord. • For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. (Hebrews 6:4-6 NKJV)

  22. Baptism does not save us… • …if one leaves the Lord. • For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. (James 2:26 NKJV) • "Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place--unless you repent. (Revelation 2:5 NKJV)

  23. Baptism does not save us… • …if it was done as an infant. • “…when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.” (Ac. 8:12)

  24. Baptism does not save us… • …if it was done as an infant. • Conditions Placed Upon Candidates: • “…Simon himself also believed; and …was baptized…” (Ac. 8:13) • “…Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his household. And many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized.”

  25. Baptism does not save us… • …if it was done without the proper understanding. • "It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. (John 6:45 NKJV)

  26. Baptism does not save us… • …if one believes they were saved, THEN baptized. • Baptism puts one “into Christ” (Rom. 6:3) Baptism is where one “puts on” Christ (Gal. 3:27) • Since salvation is “in Christ” (2 Tim. 2:10)…salvation could not have occurred BEFORE baptism because that would mean one is saved before one is in Christ!

  27. The Lesson: • One who is saved has been baptized! • But not everyone who is baptized will be saved!
