  2. Do Now Think- why are certain regions of the world more desirable to live than others. Pair- Discuss your thoughts with your shoulder partner. Share- share your thoughts with the class.

  3. Essential Questions ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS How do climate and vegetation make people adapt/change their ways of life? How do people depend and adjust to land and water? Why do people move from place to place?

  4. Turn to page 52. Vocabulary Discussion * population distribution * environment * irrigation * desertification * drought * migration * urbanization * metropolitan area * demographer

  5. Vocabulary • Population Distribution- the way that people are spread out in different places throughout the world. • Environment- surroundings • Irrigation- The use of canals, ditches, or pipes to move water to dry places. • Desertification- the long-term process in which fertile soil is changed into a desert.

  6. Vocabulary 5) Drought- a period with little or no rainfall. 6) Migration- movement of groups of people from one place to another. 7) Urbanization- The movement of people from rural areas to cities. 8) Metropolitan- a city and all the suburbs and other population areas around it.

  7. Turn to page 52. Follow along with the CD.

  8. Guided Notes With a partner, complete the following sections in guided notes section of your lesson packet. Population and Settlement People, Climate, Vegetation If you do not complete these in class, they are to be completed for HW

  10. Guided Notes • Turn to page 54 in your book. We will continue to read up to page 57. • Complete the last two sections in the guided notes. Section 3 – People, Land, and Water Section 4- People on the move

  11. Graphic Organizer With a partner, use your textbook to complete the “Effects on Settlement” column on the graphic organizer. Lets do the first one together!!

  12. Graphic Organizer The following are factors that affect where people live: Climate Vegetation Land Water Pull Factors Push Factors Write these in the left hand column of your organizer

  13. Graphic Organizer Climate-----more people live in temperate climates Vegetation- people tend to live where crops and vegetation grow easily. Land- People avoid rugged, mountainous land Water- People live near water supplies

  14. Graphic Organizer contd. Pull Factors- People are drawn to places where they can earn a living more easily Push Factors- People move away from places where they cannot find work and where they experience drought and food shortages

  15. Do Now How would your life change if the physical geography of where you live was different?
