  2. Introduction Congratulations and thank you for contributing your time and talent to Zonta club leadership. Since its founding in 1919, Zonta has grown and flourished thanks to the passion and skill of dedicated volunteers like you. The following training module is designed to help you succeed in your new role. It will familiarize you with the basics of being a club president-elect or vice president and help you locate resources within Zonta to extend your knowledge and answer your questions. We know you’re busy, so let’s get started!

  3. Your role Whether a club has a president-elect and/or vice president(s) depends on the by-laws of the club. Some clubs have two vice presidents, the first vice president ranking higher than the second. Responsibilities may be divided accordingly. In either case, president-elects and vice presidents must be prepared to perform the duties of the president in the absence or inability of the president.

  4. Your Most Valuable Resource • Every Zontian should have a copy of the Club Manual. As president-elect or vice president, it is essential. • Download as a pdf from the ZI website, under Member Resources. • Covers all aspects of club operation and management, including the roles of officers. • Includes Zonta history and scripts for installing new members and club board.

  5. President-Elect/First Vice President Responsibilities • The president-elect or first vice president performs duties assigned by the president. • Prepares to assume the presidency. This may include: • Evaluating the growth of the club • Planning for dynamic programs and effective, mission-focused service projects • Helping to formulate long-range plans • Considering appointments for committee chairmen.

  6. President-Elect/First Vice President Responsibilities The president-elect/vice president also: • Reports to the club president or board as required. • Performs duties as designated by the president and the club board, including serving as a committee chairman. • Attends area meetings, district conferences and, if possible, biennial conventions.

  7. President-Elect/First Vice President Responsibilities • Briefs the incoming president-elect on the responsibilities of the position. • Passes the records of office and other relevant materials to the incoming president-elect within a reasonable time after assuming office. • If a president is unable to complete the term of office, the president-elect or first vice president becomes president.

  8. And there’s more! In some clubs, the first vice president is also responsible for membership. Confer with your club president and board to learn if this is your role. The responsibilities of the membership chairman can be found in the Club Manual on Pages 40-41.

  9. Second Vice President Responsibilities In some clubs, the second vice president is also responsible for programs. Confer with your club president and board to learn if this is your role. Interesting and relevant programs engage members and draw prospective members. This is an important role and responsibility.

  10. And there’s more! As president-elect or vice president, it is your duty to review and understand the complete range of your responsibilities. You can find complete information in the Club Manual on Page 24.
