  3. About the Author • Born: June 23, 1921 in North Carolina • Died: October 26, 2006 in California • During World War II he was a sailor in the U.S. Navy • Wrote over 50 books, numerous short stories, a few poems, and even movie scripts • Got his ideas from research and real-life • The character of Phillip is based upon a boy from his neighborhood. • Taylor spent time in the Caribbean and that is what allows him to give such realistic descriptions of the various places.

  4. Setting • Begins on the island of Curaçao in the Dutch West Indies • Most of the story occurs on a tiny, isolated island in the West Indies • The West Indies includes islands such as: Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Curaçao • Takes place in 1942, shortly after the United States enters World War II

  5. Curaçao • Willemstad, Curaçao, February, 1942 • Curaçao is known as a “contact zone” • Where people are brought together by trade • Oil trade • Slave trade • Mixing of cultures and dialect • Dialect- is the way people from a certain area talk

  9. What is a Cay? • A cay is a small, sandy island with low elevation that has been formed on the surface of a coral reef. • Also pronounced “KEY” • Usually found in tropical areas of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans.

  11. Characters • Phillip Enright- 11 year old boy who lives on the island of Curaçao in the Dutch West Indies. He is white and an American. He has been brought up to feel superior to people of other races and nationalities. • Timothy- is an old West Indian man who was a sailor at one point. He is very knowledgeable about survival topics and is an extremely valuable resource to Phillip. • Stew Cat- the cook’s cat who lives with Phillip and Timothy on the Cay.

  12. Characters

  13. Dedication • “To Dr. King’s dream, which can only come true if the very young know and understand”. • “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed, ‘We hold these truths self evident, that all men are created equal.’…I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

  14. Theme • Racial bias and segregation were still prominent in the United States at this time. • Overcoming Prejudice • You will see how Phillip and Timothy relate to each other and how their characters grow.

  15. While you’re reading, think about… • How will they survive on this island? • Will Phillip be able to overcome his prejudice? • How will the relationship between Phillip and Timothy change? • How will Phillip’s character grow and change throughout the novel?

  16. Shipwrecked! • You and your group are shipwrecked on a small, tropical island similar to the one where Phillip and Timothy live. There are some trees and a limited amount of fresh water. • What food, clothing, and other items will you need to survive? • With your group list the 10 most important items and rank them from 1 to 10. 1 being the most important and 10 being the least important. • Each person must write this list in their notebook. We will look back on it at the end of the novel.
