  2. Bibliography • Born in an Iowa village in 1874. • Grew in Oregon • Enrolled into Stanford University when it opened in 1891. • Graduated as a mining engineer • Married his Stanford sweet heart, Lou Henry and they went to China • Worked for a private corporation as China’s leading engineer.

  3. Biography continued.. • In 1900 the Boxer Rebellion caught the Hoovers in Tientsin. Hoover directed the building of barricades and once risked his life rescuing Chinese children, while the settlement was under heavy fire.

  4. Biography Continued.. • The American Consul General asked his help in getting stranded tourists home when Germany declared war on France. • His committee helped 120,000 Americans return to the United States.

Biography Continued.. • President Wilson appointed Hoover head of Food Administration • He was a member of the Supreme Economic Council and head of the American Relief Administration and organized shipments of food for starving millions in Central Europe and extended aid to famine- stricken Soviet Russia in 1921.

  6. In 1928, Hoover was nominated as the Republican candidate for president on the first ballot with Charles Curtis as his running mate. • He ran against Alfred Smith, the first Roman Catholic to be nominated to run for president. • Hoover ended up winning 58% of the vote and 444 out of 531 votes.   8. Presidential Terms Historical Events In May 1932, the Bonus March took place, approximately 15,000 vets marched on Washington to demand immediate payment of bonus insurance money the had been awarded in 1924. October 29, 1929 stock market collapsed, triggering the Great Depression.

  9. Presidential Terms Military Involvement During the depression, President Herbert Hoover appointed the Forbes Commission, which concluded that the occupation, failing to respond to Haiti's problems, should be abolished. U.S. troops began to transfer responsibilities to Haitian nationals.

  10. President Hoover reacted to the Great Depression like many previous leaders and peers before him and during his presidency. He thought that the government didn’t need to get involved. That individual people needed to fend for themselves and that it was not a crisis .that everyone was involved in. Presidential Term Domestic Affairs

  11. Presidential Administration • Secretary of State: Henry Stimson • A member of the New York National Guard Stimson served in the United States Army in the First World War. Stimson served as a lieutenant colonel in France before being promoted to command the 31st Field Artillery. • Secretary of Inferior: Ray Wilbur • Wilbur met Hoover during his years at Stanford University and they became close friends. When Hoover became President he asked Wilbur to be his secretary of inferior.

  12. Presidential Administration • Secretary of Navy: Charles Addams • His name was Charles Samuels Addams but many people just called him “Chill”. His dream was to work for The New Yorker and has drew over 1300 cartoons for them before he died. • Attorney: General William Mitchell • He tried to develop a new branch of air forces trying to use the new aerial warfare concept to its full potential.

  13. Presidential Administration • Vice President: Charles Curtis • He served on many committees including Coast Defenses, Cuban Relations, the Five Civilized Tribes, Pensions, Fisheries, Committee on Rules (chairman), Finance and Appropriations and Indian Affairs.

  16. Treaties/Presidential Accomplishments • Hoover is known for being the President during the time the stock market crashes and the Great Depression.
