  1. Write down your first thoughts that come to mind when you look at this picture. Where do you think they are? What time period do you think these people are from? Who in the picture stands out to you and why?

  2. The Puritans • English Puritans seeking religious freedom began to arrive in New England in 1620. • They strove to lead exemplary lives and valued self-reliance, hard work, and discipline. • Their values and culture were formed from their strict religious beliefs.

  4. The role of the Puritan woman… 1. Give birth to children 2. Handle house hold duties (cook, clean, etc. ) 3. Teach children how to read and write and of course Bible lessons 4. Attend church and town meetings but never allowed to speak at either If a woman failed on any of her duties she was exiled from the town.

  5. The Role of the Puritan man… • Tend to their household • Tend to the land • Contribute to the community through participation in the local church/ government

  6. Witchcraft Hysteria The Puritan’s strong religious beliefs on how God and Satan interacted and their beliefs on Satan’s powers, actions and effects on society made their society an easy target for witchcraft hysteria. These beliefs contributed greatly in their fear of Satan and his followers to the point where it dominated their society in the sixteenth and seventieth centuries and lead to the witchcraft hysteria.

  7. Satan and his powers… Puritan ministers constantly discussed the various powers that Satan possessed, and warned their parishioners not to underestimate his powers. The clergy believed Satan had the ability to direct one into despair, suicide, violence, pain, and sickness.

Why or why not? • Judging from his sermon, what underlying philosophical beliefs does Edwards hold? What underlying assumptions does he have about the nature of both humans and God? • Why do you think Edwards uses the image of God’s hands to describe God’s power? What makes this an effective image?
