  5. What is it? It is a state-wide mediation process available through each AEA. Started March 2000 Iowa has 10 AEAs and each AEA has a contact person. SEA assists with having state-wide system.

  6. What if someone wants to use the process? Step One. Contact the Coordinator Step Two. Inform why needed. Step Three. Next steps will be decided.

  7. Role of Resolution Facilitator Explain the process and answer questions. Assist in establishing basic communication guidelines. Help clarify the issues of concern. Facilitate a conversation to improve the situation. Make no judgment but focus the responsibility for resolving the issues on those present.

  8. Goal Major Goalof the AEA Resolution Facilitator process is to have an option available to help resolve differences at the earliest possible time. Another goal: Have persons receive conflict resolution skill training so that individuals will enhance their skills to get differences addressed and meaningfully resolved in a collaborative manner.

  9. The “mediator” is called a Resolution Facilitator. • Four Occasions May Use RF: • When parties are agreeable to using the RF process because there are concerns or differences of opinion about issues. • When parties believe an IEP Facilitator could be beneficial at an IEP meeting (and the RF could act in that role).

  10. When a parent has requested a hearing in special education and a resolution meeting must be offered. The RF would facilitate the meeting. • When a RF may assist at any other type of meeting when conflict may be anticipated.

  11. What type of issue? When there is a conflict or concern that may involve: General education Special education Section 504 Early Access Any issue involving a school setting

  12. Who can use the AEA Resolution Facilitator Process? • Parents and educators • Educators • Others with LEA or AEA (such as support staff)

  13. Each AEA has a designated person (or persons) known as the AEA Resolution FacilitatorCoordinator. *The Coordinator serves as contact person for those interested in having the assistance of AEA RF to assist with resolving differences.

  14. The DE Maintains a List The Coordinators are selected by the AEAs. The RF Coordinator maintains the AEA’s roster of qualified Resolution Facilitators.
