  1. Vergence in mild traumatic brain injury: A pilot study Dora Szymanowicz, OD, MS; Kenneth J. Ciuffreda, OD, PhD; Preethi Thiagarajan, BS Optom, MS; Diana P. Ludlam, BS, COVT; Wesley Green, MS; Neera Kapoor, OD, MS

  2. Aim • Assess static and dynamic aspects of vergence in visually symptomatic patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). • Relevance • This intervention may help servicemembers attain their vocational and avocational goals in a more timely and efficient manner.

  3. Methods • Using dynamic and static objective and subjective measures of vergence, we assessed 21 adults with mTBI and near-work symptoms and compared results with 10 controls. Sequence of research protocol procedures. PRII = Power Refractor II.

  4. Results • Dynamic parameters • Responses in those with mTBI were: • Slowed. • Variable. • Delayed. • Static parameters • Those with mTBI had: • Reduced near point of convergence. • Restricted near vergence ranges.

  5. Conclusion • Results provide evidence that mTBI has substantial adverse effect on vergence function. • Vergence abnormalities should be considered in comprehensive vision examination of mTBI patients. • Their presence may adversely affect quality of life.
