Background • Alabama has high obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer rates. • Poor nutrition and lack of physical activity are consistently listed as contributing factors. • Currently, the problems are being addressed separately with poor lifestyle choices (wellness) being the overarching issue. Seed Grant Plan • The Blueprint document will be used as the basis for developing a State Wellness Plan (SWP). • The Goal of the SWP is to become the umbrella plan for • the obesity state plan • chronic disease plans • school wellness policies and • the worksite wellness initiative.   4. Key Partners Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) have a good history of working together. Examples include: • State Obesity Task Force- Despite limited resources, the ADPH and UAB pledged to work together to address healthy opportunities for all Alabamians. • UAB • Department of Pediatrics and • MCHB funded Leadership Education in Pediatric Nutrition training program (PI- Bonnie A. Spear, PhD, RD) ADPH & UAB will partner again for the Wellness coordination. Alabama Blueprint Project

Outcome Goals • The SWP will coordinate efforts, form new and strengthen existing partnerships while maintaining existing councils and/ or task forces; • identify untapped resources while being more efficient with current resources; • and will coordinate delivering consistent messaging.   6. The process will prioritize efforts to improve the health and well-being of Alabama communities. • Focus will be on all Alabama families and communities, with special emphasis on children and adolescents. Alabama Blueprint Project

  7. Year One • The State Health Officer will invite leaders to working meetings representing different health related task forces /organizations/ councils, public health, academia, health care, education, businesses, and community groups. Alabama Blueprint Project

  10. Year One Plans • Four face-to-face meetings will be held, with two conference calls between meetings. • Target dates: • Initial meeting- July 2007 • Follow up meetings- October 2007, January 2008, April 2008 • Conference Calls- September 2007, February 2008 Alabama Blueprint Project

  11. Initial Meeting Agenda • Pre-meeting preparation: A. Invitations with RSVP B. Blueprint guidance and helpful resources distributed by mail • At the meeting: • The State Health Officer will present the charge to develop and implement a comprehensive wellness state plan. The purpose is not to change the approaches already in progress, but rather to help Alabama work together as a whole. B. “Ground Rules” include: - using evidence based practices and - working transparently C. Using the Blueprint as the basis, a social-ecological approach will be used. Alabama Blueprint Project

  12. Initial MeetingRound-robin table discussions • Five tables, with a leader at each table, will cover the following areas: 1. Preschool - childcare 2. Schools- school wellness 3. Community- environmental changes 4. Home- Barriers to healthy living 5. Statewide- Communication • Attendees will self-select which two tables they will go to for group discussion.   13. Round Robin table concerns will be presented to the group by the table leaders. • Repeating themes will be “sifted out.” • Members will be asked to self select into a subcommittee based on the discussions from the table. Alabama Blueprint Project

Reporting back to the group • The Wellness Task Force (WTF) group’s chair will work to publicize the progress with all organizational groups to insure transparency and complete support from the separate organizations. • After each meeting and conference call, e-mail minutes will be distributed.   15. Making the Plan available • Graphic design professionals will assist in the formal layout and design for web and limited hard copy production. • The final state report will be in a printed format and a web page format. Alabama Blueprint Project

Evaluation • Anevaluation component will be designed as part of the plan's development. • On-line survey tool will be used after the initial and 3rd meetings. • On-going group feedback will be collected through e-mails and opinions. • Subsequent years evaluations will measure the effectiveness of the task force in getting wellness issues addressed through individual task forces, and through new wellness initiatives.   17. Blueprint Cornerstones the Project Will Address (#’s 2, 3 & 5) • Cornerstone #2, Collaboration. The Wellness Task Force will promote a healthy lifestyle by maximizing partnerships. • Building new and enhancing existing relations (Strategy #1). • Collaboration with new partners will build and strengthen efforts (Strategy #2). • Alabama does not receive obesity funds for nutrition and physical activity interventions; therefore, we must identify, assess, and access funding resources and partners (Strategy #4). • This coordinated focus will assist in using limited resources and generating new resources by involving the whole state. Blueprint Cornerstones the Project Will Address • Cornerstone #3, Science and Research, will be addressed by identifying key elements needed in the Wellness Plan. • A community- based research agenda that integrates nutrition and physical activity polices, programs, and services will be developed. • The stakeholders engaged will have relevant expertise and skills to support and guide community members in policy development and planning utilizing evidenced based research. Blueprint Cornerstones the Project Will Address • Cornerstone #5, Communications, will be addressed by utilizing the existing State Obesity Task Force motto of “One Choice at a Time, One Step at a Time, and One Life at a Time”. Media messages will be tailored for schools, work places, and community sites. Alabama Blueprint Project

  20. Future Plans • Year Two: The SWP will be implemented, with presentations made at each of the representing entities’ meetings; evaluation processes will be started; and implementations at the local level will occur. Alabama Blueprint Project
