Facts: • Located about 1,250 miles west-northwest of Honolulu. • Midway Island measures 1.8 miles long by 1.2 miles wide or approx. 1,200 acres. • In 1938, the U.S. Navy starting developing the island in preparation of a war. • June 1942, the Battle of Midway between the the United States of America and Japan.

Facts: • In 1988, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services established an “Overlay” National Wildlife Refuge. • 1993 marked the closure of the Naval Air Facility on Midway Island and the transfer to Fish and Wildlife Services. • Goal: Restoring the biological diversity and conserving its historic and natural resources.

  6. Facts: • One Runway 6/24 that is 7,900’ x 200’. • Midway is identified as an ETOPS airfield for the central Pacific Ocean.

New Development: • VISION 100—CENTURY OF AVIATION REAUTHORIZATION ACT. • The DOT and DOI enter into a reimbursable agreement to fund airport development. • Funding available from fiscal year 2004 to fiscal years ending before Oct. 1, 2007, from amounts availablein the discretionary fund. • The maximum obligation under the agreement for any suchfiscal year shall be $2,500,000.
