  2. Day 1 Opening Plenary • Introductions (Name, affiliation, research interests, linkages) • What is MOSAiC? An Overview • Update on Status and Coordination • IASC status • EU, US, and other funding possibilities • Coordination: WWRP/YOPP, CliC, etc. • Infrastructure: Update on PolarStern, others.

  3. Workshop Objectives • Fill in the outline with details/content • Modify outline as needed • Agree on some basics for the approach • Identify individuals/groups to lead sections • Framework for prioritization of activities • Identify necessary preparatory activities • Minimize “implementation” discussion, except where it is integral to the science

  6. Sub-System Breakouts • Identify and document specific science needs • Needs that can be addressed by MOSAiC • Physical, biological, chemical (as appropriate) • Consider prioritization Need skillful rapporteurs to work on writing specific language (building content for the science plan)

  7. Sub-System Breakouts • What are known deficiencies in our knowledge? What are specific processes/parameterizations that need to be improved? What is the current state of our modeling abilities? • Who has identified these issues? Are they documented and broadly accepted as important issues? (i.e., IPCC, programmatic documents, papers, etc.) • How does the specified process interact with the rest of the system and/or other processes? (Identify linkages and interfaces) • What are the impacts of this issue on our system-level understanding and modeling abilities? • What is the pathway for progress? What would progress look like? Are there realistic metrics for progress? (Measurable progress; reduced bias with respect to joint PDFs; etc.)

  8. An Example: Cloud Phase Partitioning • Processes/parameters controlling cloud phase partitioning. Model parameterizations generally get this incorrect; specifically can’t sustain liquid water. Affects cloud radiative effects, precipitation, cloud lifetime. • Numerous papers have identified the issue and its importance for radiative effects. High level science theme in US DOE ASR program. Etc. Not specifically identified at IPCC level. • Cloud phase interacts with a) atmospheric radiative heating rates and vertical mixing processes; b) surface energy fluxes; c) aerosol properties; d) long range atmospheric advection. • Difficult to get correct SEB without correct cloud phase distribution. May impact model ability to characterize BL structure and BL processes. • Long-term, multi-parameter obs. of low-level cloud-atmos-aerosol-surface properties to constrain influences on phase partitioning >> Contribute to evaluation and development of cloud parameterizations better able to sustain supercooled liquid water. Metric: Realistic temperature-phase PDFs with liquid water down to -35C. Persistence distributions.
