  1. MOSAIC the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. Irano-Roman floor mosaic detail from the palace of Shapur I at Bishapur in Iran.

  2. Mosaic as a technique • It may be a technique of decorative art, • an aspect of interior decoration • or of cultural and spiritual significance as in a cathedral. Altered photograph, 1997. This image uses Painter's mosaic tool, tracing over the original image using a Wacom drawing tablet.

  3. Mosaic Materials • Small pieces, normally roughly cubic, of stone or glass of different colors, known as tesserae, (diminutive tessellae), are used to create a pattern or picture. • The earliest known examples of mosaics made of different materials were found at a temple building in Ubaid, Mesopotamia, and are dated to the second half of 3rd millennium BC. They consist of pieces of colored stones, shells and ivory.

  4. Mosaic Examples Reproduction of the famous Van Gogh painting Starry Night, by Brett Campbell

  5. MOSAIC EXAMPLES In the 5th and 6th centuries, the famous Beth-Alpha mosaic proudly adorned the floor of a large synagogue in Galilee. With its representations of the sacrifice of Isaac (upper left panel), the cosmic structure of the universe (circular center), and the ark of the covenant (upper right), the mosaic reflects the artist's conception of the universe, achieved by asserting the Jewish language and symbols into a Bysantine world.

  6. MOSAIC EXAMPLES Hamen – Mosaic Portrait – Lilian Broca
