Innovative Delta Technologies for Sustainable Water Management
Deltares, a non-profit research organization in Delft, Netherlands, focuses on developing innovative solutions for sustainable water management. With a multidisciplinary approach, Deltares addresses social and environmental challenges related to deltas, coastal areas, and river basins. By combining technical expertise in water management, hydraulics, and geo-engineering with insights from social sciences and policy analysis, Deltares provides comprehensive answers to complex issues. Our mission includes the integrated management of natural resources and climate adaptation strategies to ensure safe and clean living environments.

Our mission Through an integrated approach, Deltares develops know-how for innovative solutions, to make living safe, clean and sustainable, worldwide, with special emphasis, but not exclusively, on delta’s • Delta Technology • Water, ground and sub-soil issues are not just about technology but a combination of: • different policy agenda’s • multidisciplinary approach and interests • role of environment • Deltares supplies answers to social issues of living in deltas, coastal areas and river basins by combining technical expertise with an understanding of political, administrative, and social-economic processes • Technical expertise and social scientists under one roof!
Deltares: joint forces In January 2008, four Dutch partners bundled their expertise: • WL | Delft Hydraulics – hydrological engineering and integrated water management • GeoDelft -geo-engineering • Part ofTNO Building & Subsurface – ground and groundwater • Part of Rijkswaterstaat(RIKZ, RIZA en DWW)-integrated water management and hydrological engineering. • >800 FTE • Annual turnover ~100M€ • Continuously involved in ~ 20 FP funded projects • E.g: Conscience, KnowSeas, Micore, Riskbase, Scenes, Spicosa, Modelkey, .…etc.
Our expertise • Urban water management • Integrated coastal management • Integrated water management • Climate • Safety and risks • Operational forecasting systems & management systems • Water and ground quality • Spatial planning and ecology • Linear infrastructure • Innovation management • Strategic analysis • Hydraulics • Offshore • Intake & outfall systems • Dikes
Contribution by Deltares • ENV.2010.2.1.1-1 (part of Africa call - tomorrow) • Integrated management of water and other natural resources in Africa • Relations: Economics – Natural resources – Social aspects • Use of global data set for resource management (IGRAC) • Environmental flow concepts, IWRM concepts, Deltares tools • => We are looking for a consortium to join in • contact persons: marcel.marchand@deltares.nl • rinus.vis@deltares.nl • ENV.2010.2.1.1-2 • Integrated resource management based on land and land-use management • Impact on ecosystem and biodiversity services • => We are looking for a consortium to join in • contact person: jos.brils@deltares.nl
Contribution by Deltares • ENV.2010.2.1.2-1 • Evaluation of effectiveness of economic instruments in integrated water policy • Economic analyses, emission trading • => We are looking for a consortium to join in • contact person: michiel.wind@deltares.nl • ENV.2010.2.1.5.1 • Assessing vulnerability of urban systems, populations and goods in relation to natural and man-made disasters in Africa • Vulnerability and risk assessments (incl. ‘tipping points’) • Innovative building and spatial planning (‘climate and water-proof’) • Ground water management • => We are looking for a consortium to join in • contact person: dick.vandenbergh@deltares.nl
