This class focuses on the essential skills needed to work with logos and basic shapes in graphic design software. Students will learn how to place and scale logos correctly in InDesign, ensuring their projects maintain high quality and clarity. Key topics include importing TIFF files, managing linked images, using the Eyedropper tool for color sampling, and understanding the importance of alignment with guides. Students will engage in practical projects and receive homework assignments to reinforce learning.

JRN 302: Introduction to Graphics and Visual Communication- ID Demo: Working with logo, basic shapes Thursday, 2/13/14
Class Objectives • Lecture • ID Demo: Placing logos, scaling images, basic shapes • Work on project for the rest of the class • Homework assignment • Project
ID Demo: Placing logos • (review) Do not copy your logo in PS and then try to paste it in ID • You will lose points for your project • Possibility of resolution decreasing • The correct and ONLY way to get your logo “into” ID is to… • In ID…. <File <Place your TIFF logo • Look for it in the “links” palette • If you move it, rename it, change it… make sure there are no warning signs in here • Has to be the TIFF file (not jpg or psd) for all linked/placed images in ID
ID Demo: Scaling logo • Once you have your logo loaded onto your “brush” in ID, just click anywhere on the canvas • Then scale it by changing the percentages at top of screen • These are lab computers so percentages always resort back to 100% • Warning, do not increase your logo beyond 200% • Will result in pixelated/blurry logo
ID Demo: Working with logo • (Review) If your logo appears blurry on the screen, check the display settings • <View <Display Performance <High Quality Display • Be careful about moving your logo and not distorting it • Use the black arrow and click on the center of the logo to move (not the handles)
ID Demo: Working with logo • Remember that your logo has to include all elements (text, shapes, symbols) and be saved as into a raster file • Do not do some parts of the logo in PS and some in ID • Again, if you change anything regarding your placed raster image, make sure it is updated in your links palette (easy to do) • May be able to just click on warning shape that appears on top of raster image • If not, go to palette, right click on either warning icon or name of raster image and relink
ID Demo: Working with logo • If you want to “sample” the colors in your logo, many ways to do this • One way is to use the eye dropper tool to “suck up” the color • Eye dropper color you want • Use another tool (shape, line, etc.) • If you want to have color applied to text… • Type out your text, highlight it, and THEN eye dropper the color you want it to be from your logo
ID Demo: Basic shapes • Can do shapes in PS or ID • ID has rectangles/squares and circles/ovals and lines • Can use either frame tool or shape tool • Line tool is separate • PS has more basic shapes and custom shapes • So use PS for more complex shapes • And remember that if shape is a part of your logo, it HAS to be saved with your logo in PS
ID Demo: Working with logo • While you are working in ID, use/pull guides and frames to help you with alignment • When you want to see what it will look like in the end, turn them off • For guides = <View <Grids & Guides <Hide Guides • For frames = <View <Extras <Hide Frame Edges
