  1. Oxidation Numbers

  2. Octet Rule Each element wants to have 8 electrons in its outer energy shell. (8 valence electrons)

  3. How do elements follow the octet Rule? By adding or losing electrons though bonding.

  4. How many electrons does it take to make an element happy? When you know this, you know the oxidation number. Oxidation number charge acquired by gaining or losing electrons to follow the octet rule.

  5. Lewis Dot Structures Is it easier to lose or gain to get to 8….. Remember that each energy level (when full) has 8 F Ca 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 1s2 2s2 2p5

  6. Ex: Cl = -1 oxidation number Cl-1 Li = 1 as an oxidation number Li+1

  7. Things to keep in mind…. As the number of electrons increases, then the energy required to get rid of the electrons increases. (easier to get rid of one than 4….)

  8. Exception to the Octet Rule: How many valence electrons can Hydrogen and Helium have? What about Be, B, Li……
