Oxidation state of uncombined elements = 0 • Sum of ox states of all atoms in a neutral compound = 0 • Sum of ox states of all atoms in a charged ion = charge of ion • Most electronegative element in a substance is given a –’ve ox state • Some elements always have the same ox states: • Group 1 always +1 • Group 2 always +2 • Oxygen -2 (except peroxides, and F2O) • Hydrogen +1 (except metal hydrides) • Fluorine ALWAYS -1 • Chlorine -1 (except with O or F)
