  3. MISSIONS

  4. Missions: • PURPOSE: • To convert Native Texans to the Catholic faith. • To teach the Native Texans to be good citizens and loyal subjects to the Spanish crown. • To make money for the crown.

  5. Missions (cont): • DAILY LIFE: • The daily life in the mission was like nothing the natives had ever experienced. • Began the day with daily prayers. • Followed by 30 min. of religious instruction. • The natives worked all day in the fields or workshops. • Women worked in the kitchen or on spinning wheels. • The children would attend school. • After dinner, everyone in the mission would gather for more religious instruction and prayer before going to bed.

  6. PRESIDIOS

  7. Presidios: • PURPOSE: • To provide military support for the missions. • Protect colonists from Native Texan attacks. • Return runaway Native Texans. • To guard cattle and horses.

Presidios (cont): • DAILY LIFE: • Daily life for the soldiers in the presidios was often unpleasant. • They faced hard work and constant danger. • They were not paid a whole lot. • They did not get along with the priests. • Had to buy their own uniforms and equipment. • Took extra jobs to pay for food and supplies. • Some soldiers brought their families into the presidio.

  10. Towns: • PURPOSE: • Provided support for missions and presidios.

Towns (cont): • DAILY LIFE: • Routine • Where the workshops and stores were located • Literacy was limited to mostly priests, government officials and the wealthy • Women were very important • Governed by alcaldes and ayuntamientos • Dancing and telling of folktales was how they spent free time • Few doctors • No running water or sewage system • The spread of disease was common

  13. Ranches: • PURPOSE: • Provided food and supplies for the colonies

  14. Ranches (cont): • DAILY LIFE: • Vaqueros (or cowhands) took care of livestock • People worked hard morning until night
