  3. Feelings it Produces • Depression • Confusion • Extreme feelings of love • Feelings of empathy • Peacefulness • Enhanced self-confidence • More Energy

  4. Effects on the Brain • Long-term damage to brain • Memory and Thought loss • Damages the neurons that produce chemicals called serotonin • Serotonin is used to communicate with other neurons • Dull mental processes

  5. Effects on the Body • Muscle tension • Teeth clenching • Nausea • Blurred vision • Rapid eye movement • Faintness • Chills/sweating • Increase in heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature • Heart failure • Dulled senses • Tiredness and soreness

  6. Usage • 2.8 million teens have tried ecstasy • 1 out of every 11 in the nation • Most common from ages 16-25 years • Taken in pills or tablets • Sometimes snorted or smoked • Designs are put onto tablets to make ecstasy look harmless

Random Facts • Ecstasy-using teens are associated with child-like costumes, teddy bears, pacifiers, and glowing jewelry • 80% of Ecstasy is made in the Netherlands • Made for 50 cents a tablet, but costs 10-40$ in U.S. • 150 designs on Ecstasy tablets used to attract teens • The official name for Ecstasy is methylenedioxymethamphetamine, or MDMA

History of Ecstasy • Early 1900s • Patented in Germany by pharmaceutical company “Merck” • Studied for use as a diet pill, but not marketed • 1950, U.S. army considered it for chemical warfare agent • Somewhat dominant until 1970s • being used by psychotherapists • 1980s Ecstasy became party drug
