What Is Ecstasy? • MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) • Synthetic • Psychoactive • Chemically similar to Meth. • Part stimulant, part hallucinogen. • Used at all-night parties (reason called Club Drug)
Route of Administration • Most often taken in pill form. • Sometimes crushed and snorted.
Commonly Known As • Club Drug • E • X • XTC • Adam • Hug • Beans • Clarity • Lover’s speed • Love Drug
Effects • A “hit” usually lasts 3-6 hours • In about 15 minutes, enters blood stream • In about 45 minutes feel effects “high” • Known as “rolling”
Short Term Effects • Feel endless energy • Feel Hyper and very alert • Loss sense of time and perception • Anxious and agitated • Sweating, chills, dizziness • Muscle tension, nausea, blurred vision, increased HR and BP • Clenching/grinding of teeth • Dehydration
Delayed Effects (withdrawals) • Unless another dose is taken the used begins to “bump” or ‘come down” • Side effects of this are: • Feelings of sadness, depression, anxiety and memory difficulties • These can last for several days to a week or longer depending on the regularity of use.
Long Term Effects • Other than the ones on the previous slide • Dehydration can lead to hyperthermia (too hot) • Damaging kidneys and heart • May result in death • Affects Serotonin levels in brain • Serotonin plays direct roll in regulating mood, aggression, sexual activity, sleep and sensitivity to pain. • Memory loss amongst regular users
