  1. Morquio Syndrome Brought to you by a Chiefs cheerleader and her pompom.

  2. What is Morquio syndrome? • Morquio syndrome is an inherited disease of metabolism in which the body is missing or doesn't have enough of a substance needed to break down long chains of sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans.

  3. So what does that mean? • Simply stated, Morquio syndrome occurs when the organs in your body grow, but the outside of your body stays the same. • This causes people to look younger than they really are. • They cannot move their muscles the same as we do because their bodies will not allow that. • Some have to wear braces or ride in wheelchairs.

  4. Why is Morquio syndrome important to us? • It is important because we are going to read a book about a boy who has this disease. His name is Kevin Dillon, but everyone calls him “Freak” since he looks different from everyone else. • How do you think that makes the character feel to be called “Freak”?

  5. The truth is that these people are still human—they just look a little different from us.
