  1. THE WORK OF SHEPHERDS 1 PETER 5:1-4

  2. Exhortation 1Shepherd the flock of God Shepherd- feed, tend to, keep sheep Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.

  3. Exhortation 1Shepherd the flock of God Shepherd- feed, tend to, keep sheep The flock of God- stewardship, NOT ownership

  4. Exhortation 1Shepherd the flock of God Shepherd- feed, tend to, keep sheep The flock of God- stewardship, NOT ownership Among you- lit. in your care Sponsoring churches Distance oversight TWO PROBLEMS

  5. Exhortation 2Exercising Oversight Misunderstanding- The elder must do it all! O’sight- to look upon, inspect, look after, oversee A command to be obeyed, MUST oversee… Shepherding is a WORK, not a TITLE

  6. Contrast 1Voluntarily NOT under compulsion, not coerced, forced, or under pressure 1 Timothy 3:1 It is a trustworthy statement: if any man aspires to the office of overseer, it is a fine work he desires to do. Must DESIRE the work, ASPIRE to it

  7. Contrast 2With Eagerness A ready mind, willingly 1 Timothy 5:17 The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. Money is available, but should not be the motivation

  8. Contrast 3As Examples (NOT) lording it over… to be a master to hold in subjection Leadership not management, by imitation not dictation

  9. The MotivationShepherds have Chief Shepherds Says two things • Shepherds should deal with others like the Chief Shepherd does. • Shepherds are not above the law, they will give account also.

  10. There is a process in place to watch and help Christians. All are going to give an account. Are you ready?
