  1. Buddhist Festivals Visakha Puja Day, Asalha Puja Day, Magha Puja Day By: Rashana & Le-Anne

The Importance of Buddhist Festivals • Festivals vary from country to country, as they all have different Buddhist traditions. • These days are celebrated depending on the Buddhist calendar and the birthdays of Bodhisattvas. • Their festivals are based on the lunar calendar, which everyone follows except the Japanese. • Many of the festivals occur on full moons.

  3. Visakha Puja Day (Buddha Day) • Celebrated in May on the day of the full moon • Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and death • Honour the Buddha’s wisdom, purity, and compassion • People walk around the main hall three times as they recite the Three Refuges.

  4. Asalha Puja Day (Dhamma Day) • Celebrated in July on the day of the full moon. • Takes place in Deer Park near Benares city in India. • Honour the First Sermon made by Siddhartha Gautama • They offer food to the monks and nuns. • They observe the Five Precepts and practise meditation.

  5. Magha Puja Day (Sangha Day or Fourfold Assembly) • Takes place in March on the full moon day. • Marks the four auspicious occasions: • 1,250 Arhat monks, without any preparations, came to pay respect to the Buddha. • All the monks were ordained by the Buddha himself. • The Buddha gave the Arhats the principles of Buddhism • It was the full-moon day.
