The First Crusades • The First Crusade was started when the Byzantine emperor asked Pope Urban II for knights to fight the Muslims Turks. • At the Council of Clermont in 1095 Pope Urban called Bishops and nobles to action. • Pope Urban called for a crusade to free the Holy Land because God said so. • First Crusade was a religious war.

Impact of the Crusades • Left a bitter hatred between the Muslims and the Christians. • Helped to create a money economy • Created trade routes to the Middle East • Incresed the power of the Monarchs • Increased the power of the Pope
The Reconquista • Reconquista • Campaign to retake lands in Spain from the Muslims who took it. • Took the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella and 400 years to retake Spain.
Inquisition • Inquisition • A church court set up to try people accused of heresy. • Jews and Muslims had to covert to Christianity. • If they didn’t they could be tried and killed. • This united the country but drove many of the skilled workers out of the country.
