  2. Romans 8:5-11 The Holy Spirit Changes Our Nature

  3. Romans 8:5-11 • How God Sees Men • Who is the Holy Spirit? • According to the flesh • According to the Spirit • And More! The Holy Spirit Changed Our Nature

  4. Romans 8:5-8 Life in the Spirit For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

  5. Romans 8:9-11 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

  6. How God Sees Men In God’s eyes, there are only two kinds of people in the world, those who do not belong to Him and those who do. Put another way, there are only those who are according to the flesh and those who are according to the Spirit. As far as spiritual life is concerned, God takes no consideration of gender, age, education, talent, class, race, or any other human distinctions: There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:28; ESV) He differentiates solely on the basis of their relationship to Him, and the difference is absolute.

  7. Romans 8:5-8 Life in the Spirit For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.  6For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Who is “the Spirit”?

  8. The Holy Spirit In the unity of the Godhead there be three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost: the Father is of none, neither begotten, not proceeding; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; the Holy Ghost eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son. (Westminster Confession of Faith; Chapter II, part 3)

  9. The Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is the third member of the Trinity or Godhead. He comes onto people and leaves them as he pleases in the Old Testament; but He comes to us as believers and does not leave us as a result of Christ’s own work of salvation on our behalf. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. (John 16:7)

  10. The Holy Spirit • What are the roles of the Holy Spirit? • He grieves with our actions and language. (Galatians 5:16) • The flesh prevents us from doing what we want to do. (Galatians 5:17; Romans 7) • The works of the flesh are sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, etc. (Galatians 5:19-21) • It reaps corruption. (Galatians 6:8) • We live in the flesh (literally) but not according to it.
