An IX by an Hisham Aboulyazed MEPF, MENOG-12 Dubai, 7 March 2013
Development of the Model • Founded by MCIT for ISPs that have International B.W. (8 ISPs) • Started in Q2 2002 with router Cisco2610 and switch Cisco3524 • 2 ISPs (TEDATA, NOL) of 8 ISPs • 3rdISP (EGYNET ) after 6 months • IPv4 BGP peering, Using 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interfaces • Max. exchanged local traffic was < 2Mbps (around 1 Mbps) • Total international B.W. was < 1 STM1
Developments • 2004 Broadband (DSL) initiative • 2008 Submarine cable cut • 2011 Arab spring: 3G traffic routed to CAiX
Current Status • Run by NTRA(router Cisco3602 and switch Cisco4000) • 5 ISPs connected via Giga fiber port (TEDATA, Vodafone data, EtisalatMisr, NOOR and Link.net) • 1 ISP connected via Fast Ethernet (Yalla) • BGP peering for IPv4 and IPv6 • PCH servers hosted (copy of 30+ ccTLDs) • Max. exchanged local traffic < 2 Gbps • Total international B.W. is 214 Gbps
NTRA Role.. • Regulations: Interconnection mentioned in Class A & B ISP Licenses and ISP’s compromised on NO charges for traffic exchanged. • Site Location and Neutrality: Ramses CO where all ISPs are already co-located and run by neutral organization (NTRA) • Setting Policy: in consultation with members • Access to IX : No restrictions on access to CAIX for any Licensee as per the policies published on website http://www.caix.net.eg/index.php/caix-policy
NTRA Role.. • Peering Policies: Open peering with filtering based on AS# • Fees & Support: It’s free of charge, 24/7 on-call support • Communication Channels: It’s very important to build and keep strong relations with IX members by mailing-list and periodical f2f meetings
Challenges • Incentives for ISP (licensing obligation, establishment cost, operation cost, support and administration) • Location (selection and management) • Technicalities and compatibilities • CAiX Policies & Regulations • Communication with ISPs decision makers • Building and maintain confidence
Statistics • v4 Routing table has 1987 IPv4 routes and growing • v6 Routing table has 5 IPv6 routes • 44 AS
