  2. Prime Meridian The point of 0 degrees from which all other lines of longitude are calculated. 2. Compass A device for determining directions by use of a magnetic needle pointing to magnetic north. Cartographer A person who makes maps. 4. Navigation To find one’s way safely and efficiently over land, sea, and in the air.

  3. Astrolabe An ancient instrument used to measure heavenly bodies to determine latitude . Caravel A small 15th/16th century ship with a broad brow, a high stern, and three masts used in exploration. Mercator Projection Map This shows true directions making it useful for travel at sea. It is not good for use on land as it distorts land masses as they move farther from the equator. Circumnavigate To go completely around the earth by a water route.

  4. Latitude These are parallel lines on a globe (running east to west) measuring distance north or south of the equator. Longitude These are lines on a globe (running north to south) measuring distance east to west of the Prime Meridian. Gunpowder This is a mixture of potassium nitrate, sulfur, and carbon. It was developed by the Chinese. GPS The Global Positioning System uses satellites to pin point one’s position on earth.

  5. Equator The imaginary circle running around the earth, equal distance from the north and south poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres.
