  16. What are the blocks to change and learning? • Most people hate change and any learning involves • accepting change • Lack of time and opportunity • But ….. “An innovative teacher is someone who • implements changes into his/her job” • (Peter Novotny 2002)

  17. The important thing here is… To be creative, innovative, open to change, and… never stop learning!!

  18. How can we learn as teachers? • Seminars, formal training • Professional reading • From colleagues • Willingness to try something new and listen • Sharing knowledge with others – tacit to • explicit knowledge • Encouragement from management Who stole the cookies?

  19. Learning Past and Future “We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist . . . using technologies that haven’t yet been invented . . . in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet.” Richard Riley, Secretary of Education under Clinton

  20. How about our students? What do they need to learn?

  21. Competency-Based Teaching An active, certified airline pilot is attending a 3-week training course to learn to fly a new type of aircraft. Will attending all sessions during the course ensure that the pilot will be able to fly the plane?

  22. Competency-Based Teaching Of course not! If the pilot is unable to attend 2 days of the course, does this mean the pilot won't be able to fly the plane?

  23. Competency-Based Teaching Probably not. After 4 days, the pilot does poorly on a written test. Should the pilot immediately fail the course or should the pilot continue with assistance and be given the opportunity to be tested again?

  24. Competency-Based Teaching If the pilot can pass all written tests does this indicate that the pilot can fly the plane?

  25. Competency-Based Teaching No! In addition to assessing knowledge, an evaluation of the pilot’s skills is also required.
