  7. Slope Intercept Form y = mx + b

  8. When you have a real world (word problem) that requires you to write an equation in slope intercept form, there are two things that you want to look for:

  9. Example 1: R & T Pizza has a sale on all their pizzas for $10. Extra toppings are $1.50 extra. Write an equation in slope intercept form that describes this situation. Step 1: Slope intercept form: y = mx + b Step 2: b = $10 (amount is constant) m = $1.50 (this amount will change depending on the amount of toppings you buy.) Step 3: y = mx + b y = $1.50x + 10

  10. Example 2: Jon walks 4 miles per day. Next week he wants to walk an extra 2 miles per day. Write an equation in slope intercept form that describes this situation. Step 1: Slope intercept form: y = mx + b Step 2: b = 4 (amount is constant) m = 2 (this amount will change depending on the amount of miles he actually walks.) Step 3: y = mx + b y = 2x + 4

  11. You do: You are in Tucson, AZ and a taxi company charges $5 for just using the taxi services and an additional $0.75 per mile. Write an equation that you could use to find the cost of a taxi ride in Tucson, AZ. b = $5 (amount is constant) m = $0.75 (this amount will change depending on the amount of miles.) y = mx + b y = $0.75x + $5

  12. You do: A plumber charges a fee of $75 to make a house call. They also charge $30 per hour for labor. Write an equation that you could use to find the amount a plumber charges for making a house call based on the number of hours of labor. b = $75 (amount is constant) m = $30 (this amount will change depending on the amount of hours it takes them.) y = mx + b y = $30x + $75

  22. Find the slope of the straight line that passes through (3, 4) and (3, 6). The slope of the line is undefined.
