  5. "I can translate between equations, word problems, tables and graphs."

  6. “I can identify the slope and intercepts of a line from a graph and equation.”

  7. Slope Intercept Form y = mx + b

  8. When you have a real world (word problem) that requires you to write an equation in slope intercept form, there are two things that you want to look for:

  9. Example 1: R & T Pizza has a sale on all their pizzas for $10. Extra toppings are $1.50 extra. Write an equation in slope intercept form that describes this situation. Step 1: Slope intercept form: y = mx + b Step 2: b = $10 (amount is constant) m = $1.50 (this amount will change depending on the amount of toppings you buy.) Step 3: y = mx + b y = $1.50x + 10

  10. Example 2: Jon walks 4 miles per day. Next week he wants to walk an extra 2 miles per day. Write an equation in slope intercept form that describes this situation. Step 1: Slope intercept form: y = mx + b Step 2: b = 4 (amount is constant) m = 2 (this amount will change depending on the amount of miles he actually walks.) Step 3: y = mx + b y = 2x + 4

  11. You do: You are in Tucson, AZ and a taxi company charges $5 for just using the taxi services and an additional $0.75 per mile. Write an equation that you could use to find the cost of a taxi ride in Tucson, AZ. b = $5 (amount is constant) m = $0.75 (this amount will change depending on the amount of miles.) y = mx + b y = $0.75x + $5

  12. You do: A plumber charges a fee of $75 to make a house call. They also charge $30 per hour for labor. Write an equation that you could use to find the amount a plumber charges for making a house call based on the number of hours of labor. b = $75 (amount is constant) m = $30 (this amount will change depending on the amount of hours it takes them.) y = mx + b y = $30x + $75

  13. Assignment

  14. Key concepts Slope of a line measures the steepness of the line. Rise means how many units you move up or down from point to point.  On the graph that would be a change in the y values. Runmeans how far left or right you move from point to point.  On the graph, that would mean a change of x values. in y in x

  15. Positive slope so both numbers (rise and run) are positive. rise run

  16. Negative slope so the number associated with the rise is negative. rise run

  17. slope = 0

  18. slope = undefined

  19. Slope Formula Given Two Points Given two pointsand Note that we use the letter m to represent slope.

  20. Example 1: Find the slope of the straight line that passes through (-5, 2) and (4, -7). Plug in x and y values into slope formula Simplify The slope of the line is -1.

  21. Find the slope of the straight line that passes through  (1, 1) and (5, 1). The slope of the line is 0.

  22. Find the slope of the straight line that passes through (3, 4) and (3, 6). The slope of the line is undefined.

  23. Practice • Find the slope of the line

  24. Assignment

  25. Key concepts • x-intercept is where the graph crosses the x axis. To find the x-intercept (linear equation) find the value of x when y = 0.The x-coordinate of this point is always 0. • y-intercept is where the graph crosses the y axis. To find the y-intercept, find the value of y when x = 0.The y-coordinate of this point is always 0.

  26. To find the y-intercept, find the point on the graph, where x = 0 and find y. To find the x-intercept, find the point on the graph, where y = 0 and find x.

  27. For the following slides identify the y-intercept and the x-intercept.

  28. Slope Intercept Form y = mx + b

  29. Identify the slope and y-intercept of the line with the given equation. y = 3x + 4 y = 1/3x + 7 Slope y-intercept 3x + y = 4

  30. What is the slope and y-intercept of the graphed line? Also, write the equation in slope intercept form – y = mx + b

  31. Write the linear equation

  32. What are the different types of displays used to represent linear equations? How do you translate between the different displays?

  33. Assignment

  34. Writing equations in slope intercept form ( y = mx + b ) The equation below is written in the slope intercept form y = mx + b y = 2x + 1 2x – 2y = 8

  35. Writing equations in slope intercept form ( y = mx + b ) However, 2x – 2y = 8 is not written in the correct form. 2x – 2y = 8 Isolate y -2x -2x -2y = -2x + 8 Divide both sides by -2 ÷2 ÷ -2 y = -x + 4

  36. You do: Write the following equation in slope intercept 2x + 3y = 9

  37. Write down the following equations. Then write them in slope intercept form. When you are finished hand them in. Make sure your name is on the paper. 1) 4x – 2 = y 2) – 4x + y = – 8 3) 3x + y = –5 4) y = 7 5) 5x + 2y = –6

  38. What is the slope intercept form? How can you identify the parts of an equation from a graph?
