  12. The Problem We Wanted to Solve • Correctional programs can be unpredictable, especially in the Jail setting: • Institutional lockdowns • Transfers of inmates (with or without notice) • Releases of inmates (with or without notice) • Students needed more opportunities to make progress and to get “caught up” academically • Students were coming up short in meeting the hours requirement for post-testing Innovation Exchange: Tools for Student Success, Tuesday, September 16, 2019, 2:00-3:00 pm

  13. Our Solution • Discussed the problem and developed a plan • Got connected: • Dawson – CLCP approached the jail • Forsyth – the jail reached out to the AE program • Determined that students needed a way to access adult education outside of regular classroom hours • By providing students Chromebooks, students are able to participate in distance learning options Innovation Exchange: Tools for Student Success, Tuesday, September 16, 2019, 2:00-3:00 pm

  14. A Teacher’s Perspective • Burch Roberts, Instructor Innovation Exchange: Tools for Student Success, Tuesday, September 16, 2019, 2:00-3:00 pm

  15. Technology at Correctional Sites • Always check with IT regarding policies and procedures, system requirements, maintenance, etc., before purchasing. • CLCPs might be able to assist with purchases. • Many correctional sites have alternative funding sources for purchases. Innovation Exchange: Tools for Student Success, Tuesday, September 16, 2019, 2:00-3:00 pm

  16. Technology at Correctional Sites • Encourage sites to utilize technology wisely: that is, at times when the instructor is not available for individual work; with instructor for testing or basic digital literacy skills. • We are focusing on Khan Academy and Aztec Software. • Issues: WiFi availability, hotspots, whitelisting and hacking, maintenance ownership, site structure for use.
