  1. Working in a Shipyard Lesson starter: Why did Scotland become a centre of shipbuilding? (3 marks)

  2. Today we will… • Understand the work that had to be done in a shipyard • Understand some of the hazards that came with the job

  3. Yard manager Labourer Electricians Painter French Polisher Caulker There were lots of different types of jobs in a shipyard Why would each of these be required?

  4. Caulking is the process used to make riveted iron or steel ships and boilers watertight or steam-tight. • French polishing is a wood finishing technique that results in a very high gloss surface.

  5. Working in the shipyards is better than a lot of other jobs. I live in Govan so I’m close to the yard. If you are skilled like me, the wages are good. If you are disciplined and do as you are told, you will have no trouble. You get double time to work on a Sunday. It’s a good laugh at times too. My parents came here from Belfast, like a lot of my fellow workers. We get a good chat about football and my team - Rangers. You get paid for overtime too. It’s not a bad way to make a living… Views of one Glasgow Yard worker. Write down the words or phrases which show that working in the shipyards was a good job.

  6. Working in the shipyards is hard. The work is done outside in all weather. The objects we carry are heavy. It is dangerous too. My friend fell off a ladder last year and died from a head injury. If it gets too wet, we have to go home and don’t get paid. Our managers are very strict too – I had my pay docked for leaving a minute before the steam whistle. After work, we all go for a few pints which means I spend quite a bit of my wages on the drink. Views of one Glasgow Yard worker. Write down the words or phrases which show that working in the shipyards was a difficult job.

  7. Discipline in the Shipyards… Any workman casing a nuisance in any portion of the Yard shall be fined 5p All workmen are responsible for their tools and shall pay for any damage or loss Seven minutes grace will apply after the steam whistle then the gates will be closed… anyone later will not be allowed in until breakfast time and will make up the hours later Any employee deliberately impeding another in his work shall be fined 5p

  8. A day in the Glasgow Shipyards… • You are going to write a diary entry for a shipyard worker • You can decide whether you will give a positive account, negative account or a neutral one • You should talk about your arrival to work and what you do afterwards • You will need to come up with a name and job title
