  10. Perhaps one of the most important equipment decisions we make regarding backpacking is the piece of gear we actually put on our backs!

  11. External Vs. Internal External’s Advantages • more suited for established trails • usually allows for more ventilation • more weight can be carried comfortably and loads are directed more evenly upon the hips

  12. External Continued… • the self-supporting frame offers lots of areas to attach additional gear to

  13. External Vs. Internal Internal’s Advantages • more suited for rough trails • has a lower center of gravity allowing more balanced and delicate movement • closer, tighter fit allowing more arm movement

  14. Internal’s Advantages… • closer, tighter fit allowing more arm movement

  15. How to fit a Pack….. • 1st – measure your torso length

  16. In general, pack sizes correspond to the following torso lengths 14" to 15-1/2" = X-Small 16" to 17-1/2" = Small 18" to 19-1/2" = Medium 20" and up = Large

  17. Waste belt size is also important! 22" to 28" = Small 28" to 34" = Medium 34" and up = Large

  18. Capacity - Another important consideration of any backpack is its capacity • Shoulder Straps - A good quality pack has well designed adjustable padded shoulder straps.

  19. Insight Hebrews 12:1 ...”lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”

  20. Questions for Discussion • Have you been carrying around “weight” you should not be? • What kind of stuff do you own that you think you could get rid of? • Does the type of stuff you own, define who you are?
