  1. Chapter 1What is Physics Dr. Zalesinsky

  2. Physics • Physics is a branch of knowledge that involves the study of the physical world • Involves subatomic to galactic in size • Physics leads to great discoveries *

  3. The Wanderers Galileo and the Scientific method

  4. Scientific Method • Galileo’s study brought a systematic method to observing, experimenting, and analyzing. • Galileo not only was a great discoverer in astronomy but also derived the modern scientific method

  5. Mars • Telescope images (optics) improved so much that people believed that there were ice caps and mountains like earth • In 1960s, the US and Russia launched unmanned rockets to land on Mars • When images were sent back the differences in the two planets were strikingly revealed.

  6. Comparisons Earth Mars Devoid of Life Ice on Mountain caps May have had liquid water initially due to having warmer climate No oxygen in atmosphere • Diverse Life forms • Plentiful liquid water • Climate able to sustain both frozen and liquid water • Oxygen atmosphere

  7. Help Wanted • The careers and preparation of the scientists who will work with current Mars rovers and future manned missions to Mars are diverse and include the following: • Physicists • Geologists • Chemists • Engineers (mechanical, electrical, aeronautical ) • Computer designers, developers, engineers

  8. Webcasts NPR Webcast on Mars Missions Logistics Fake Mars Mission
