  2. Water Pollution: • The addition of any substance that has a negative effect on 1) water or the 2) living things that depend on water

  3. The substances that cause water pollution are called __________. • Pollutants

  4. What are the 3 major sources of water pollution? • 1) Human Wastes • 2) Industrial Wastes • 3) Chemical Runoff

  5. 1) Human wastes • Pollutant: disease-causing organisms • Cause illnesses such as Cholera • Some viruses, parasites, bacteria are able to resist chlorine and other water treatment processes (E. coli) • During heavy rains and floods, sanitary sewers overflow and run into storm sewers, polluting the water • *What can you do to protect yourself after a flood? • Boil water for drinking and cooking after a flood

  6. 2) Industrial Wastes • Pollutants: chemicals, smoke, heated water • Toxic Chemicals can leech into nearby rivers and lakes (PCBs, lead, mercury, copper) • Heat Pollution: water is used to cool machinery in factories –warm water released into a nearby river raises the temperature of the water, sometimes making it too hot for organisms to survive • Smoke and Exhaustfrom burning coal and oil pour into the air, releasing sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide • Produces ACID RAIN –precipitation that is more acidic than normal

  10. 3) Chemical Runoff • Pollutant: chemicals • Fertilizers causes algae to grow too quickly (nitrates & phosphates: eutrophication can occur) • Pesticides can kill insects that are not pests, as well as the animals that eat them (DDT) • Oil from cars can pollute wells, aquifers, and lakes and ponds

  11. Difference between Fertilizers and Pesticides • Fertilizers: used to feed plants with required nutrients • Pesticides: used for eliminating, preventing, and controlling pests that would be harmful to plant growth

  12. Point Source vs. Nonpoint Source • 1) Point Source: a specific source of pollution that can be easily identified • Ex. pipe carrying brightly colored water • 2) Nonpoint Source: a widely spread source of pollution that cannot be tied to a specific point of origin --Ex. acid rain

Water Pollution Solutions: CLEANUP • Certain plant roots filter particles from water and can absorb metals and chemicals • Certain bacteria can purify wastewater, can consume oil, can brain down toxic chemicals in rivers • Building artificial wetlands need coal mines to treat acidic mining runoff

Water Pollution Solutions: PREVENTION -reuse water that factories use to cool water instead of releasing it into a river -industries use fewer toxic materials (ex. printing inks can be made with water instead of chemicals) -farmers can plant fields of grasses that filter out pollutants before water reaches a river -paint and motor oil should never be poured down the drain –take chemicals to a hazardous waste site
