  2. Know What qualities does a species need to promote survival? “I don’t know anything.” is not an acceptable answer. Use complete sentences. Evidence After listening to the PowerPoint lecture, come back here and list evidence to explain why your answer to the above question is or is not a good answer. You may also use other outside sources to help you respond. There is a 10 year drought in WA state. Predict which species has the greatest chance of survival. Explain your reason. Behavioral - actions Example: go to the pool on a hot day 2. Physical - body parts that control life processes Example: gills/lungs 3. Body parts and/or coloring Example: Bird’s feathers blend into the foliage or a walking stick looks like a twig. Why adapt? Species won’t survive if they can’t adapt. Example: A cactus must be able to store water in order to survive in the desert. Do humans adapt? 1. Too warm? Example: Wear light clothing, drink cool drinks, eat food that does not require cooking 2. Too cold? Example: Wear heavy clothing, drink hot drinks, eat hot food extinction - a species no longer exists. This can happen to plants or animals. Examples: golden frog, great auk, dodo bird, passenger pigeon, American chestnut tree (the list goes on for pages and pages!) How do extinctions occur? The environment changes and the species’ adaptive skills are not sufficient for it to survive. 1. Over hunting/over fishing 2. Loss of habitat environmental changes 3. Loss of food source 4.
