ICT to develop children's problem solving skills • To consider the appropriate use of IWBs and transference in the primary classroom. • To show how models and images can support children’s thinking and reasoning skills. • To explore existing IWB files and adapt them for your classroom. • Children need to be able to hypothesise and try out • their ideas as easily as possible. This session will • look at ways in which ICT can support children in this and • help them develop their problem solving skills.

  3. ICT to develop children's problem solving skills • There are five main problem types…. • Word problems (single and multi-step) • Finding all possibilities • Logic puzzles • Diagram problems and visual puzzles • Finding rules and describing patterns

ICT to develop children's problem solving skills Using IWB files • adapt existing resources to meet the needs of the children in your class and your teaching style. • be familiar with IWB software • make your own IWB files • use additional technology • attach sound files by using digital dictaphones, cameras (sound function) and microphones • make links to other files on your PC/laptop and to the world wide web • add film clips captured by cameras and video cameras such as the Flip camera • make use of stand alone technology such as talking tins • access SD cards by using a card reader (if not supplied on PC/laptop)

  6. ICT to develop children's problem solving skills • Using other technologies • Digital dictaphone– to capture voice and sounds. Link these to your IWB software images or text. Children with poor reading skills can then access the mathematical content. Sound file converting software is available online to convert files which can be used by your boards. • Microphone – to record directly to your PC/laptop • Talking tins – 10 and 40 second recording capacity. Set up and use with logic activities, where reading may pose a problem for young children or those who struggle with reading. • Talking books – with SD card which can be removed and copied. A new book created without losing your original. • Cameras and video cameras – use SD cards which can be read easily by your PC/laptop
