  1. Betrayal By Mrs. Vogelsanger

  2. Justin and Caitlin fell in love in junior high. They adored each other and were always together. They married after graduating college.

  3. They bought a beautiful home in Glen Ellyn and looked forward to spending their futures together.

  4. One day, on the way home from buying flowers for Caitlin, Justin crashed into a tree two blocks from their home. The accident caused severe brain damage. Justin now had a tendency to scream uncontrollably at random moments every day.

  5. The car accident prompted the young couple to go out and buy life insurance policies. Each of them were insured for $750,000.

  6. Although Caitlin was sympathetic to Justin’s new condition, it caused a lot of strain on the marriage. Justin lost his job, gained 350 pounds, sat on the couch all day, and was beginning to smell of rotten peas. Naturally, this caused a lot of fighting in the Ortiz home.

  7. Justin couldn’t take it anymore. He was sick of Caitlin constantly yelling at him. And, to top it off, he was completely broke from being out of work so long. What was he going to do? He was going to lose his house, his car, everything he had ever worked for! No one would ever respect him again.

  8. Feeling sorry for himself, Justin began spending more and more time at the bar. He would order himself a tall glass of milk and try to think about ways to get out of the mess he was in. It was at the bar that Justin met Jenny.

  9. Jenny took Justin’s breath away. She was so beautiful, so smart! She listened to him as he complained about Caitlin and they began spending more and more time together. He didn’t care that she was married to Tre Romano. All he cared about was Jenny. Caitlin slowly began to suspect something was up.

  10. One day, Caitlin saw Justin and Jenny together on the street. She was so angry that she ran up to the couple and began pushing Jenny away from Justin. They began fighting and would have continued if Justin hadn’t stepped in and put a stop to it. As Justin pulled Jenny away from Caitlin, Jenny screamed, “You better watch your back! I’m coming after you! I’m going to kill you!”

  11. Ten days after that fight with Jenny, Caitlin was killed. She was found at 11pm at the local train station. She had clearly been hit in the head with a blunt object and had been dead for at least an hour before she was found. Detective Alex Wilson was put in charge of the case.

  12. Detective Wilson had been working in the homicide unit for a total of 3 weeks. After completing his work at the crime scene of Mrs. Caitlin Ortiz, the detective sat in his car, confused. Nothing had been taken from the victim’s purse. Her jewelry was still on and there were no tears in her dress, indicating a struggle. What had happened at that train station? Sighing, Detective Wilson closed his car door and walked up to the Ortiz home. It was his job to let the victim’s husband know what happened.

  13. Justin seemed devastated when he heard Detective Wilson’s words. His body shook with sobs and he began his random screaming. Once he calmed down, he was able to articulate his feelings. “Who could do this?!” he cried. “She was so beautiful! So sweet! She was the love of my life!” Detective Wilson glanced around the house. There was nothing that seemed suspicious. However, as he left Justin’s house he noticed a car quickly pull away from the house. He quickly memorized the license plate number and headed to the station.

  14. Back at the station, Detective Wilson ran the plate number he had memorized at the victim’s house. The name Tre Romano came up. Interested, Detective Wilson began making some phone calls and found out quite a bit of useful information.

  15. Justin was called in to the police station and took a polygraph test. Unfortunately, the results of the test were inconclusive. Detective Wilson couldn’t tell if he was lying. When they asked about Tre and Jenny Romano, Justin gave a long explanation.

  16. Justin told Detective Wilson that Jenny was a crazy woman. “She was obsessed with me and was extremely jealous of my wife. When she heard about the life insurance policy on Caitlin, Jenny started talking about what we could do with that kind of money. I explained to her that, although Caitlin and I had been having some problems, I would never do anything to hurt her!” he explained.

  17. Detective Wilson interviewed Jenny at the police station for a few hours. She told him over and over again that she had nothing to do with Caitlin’s death. Suddenly, another detective called Detective Wilson out of the interview room. He told Detective Wilson that a hair was found at Caitlin’s crime scene and they had just gotten it back from the lab. After doing DNA testing, it was confirmed. The hair belonged to Jenny. She was thrown into the nearest jail cell.

  18. Suddenly, tons of people began coming forward with information about both Jenny AND Justin. They told Detective Wilson that Jenny and Justin had been completely in love. Neither of them cared about their marriages. People had heard Jenny threaten to kill Caitlin on the street and really thought she was capable of doing it. They promised Detective Wilson that Justin had to have been involved too. He was broke and needed the life insurance money. Besides that, he was tired of Caitlin and only thought about being with Jenny.

  19. After hearing so many people say that Justin had to be involved, Detective Wilson decided to take another look at the evidence. Sure enough, there was a footprint found near Caitlin’s body at the crime scene. After analysis, it was clear that the footprint came from a size 10 Adidas sandal. Detective Wilson quickly got a search warrant for the Ortiz home. He was stunned when he found a pair of size 10 Adidas sandals in Justin’s closet. Justin was quickly arrested and thrown into the jail cell across from Jenny.

  20. Jenny and Justin talked. Although they still loved each other, they still thought each other were murderers. Justin would complain to Jenny that LOTS of men wear size 10 Adidas sandals. The police shouldn’t be looking at only him. Jenny would complain to Justin that anyone could have placed her hair at the scene of the crime. But who? And why? As the trial approached, Justin began to lose faith that he would be found not guilty. Tre called Jenny in jail, told her that she was getting what she deserved and asked for a divorce. Justin and Jenny were terrified for the trial.

  21. Justin cried on the stand as he tried to make the jury understand that anyone could have been wearing those Adidas sandals. But, he looked terrible on the stand when he couldn’t explain his affair with Jenny and the amount of life insurance money he would receive because of Caitlin’s death. After all, he would be out of debt and free to live a life with Jenny. Jenny desperately tried to explain that anyone close to her could have planted her hair at the scene. However, she could not explain away the threat to kill Caitlin on the street and her love for Justin.

  22. Ultimately, both Jenny Romano and Justin Ortiz were found guilty of first degree murder. They were sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole. The jurors were confident in their decision and the judge fully agreed. Both of them had strong motives and had left physical evidence at the crime. The judge told Justin and Jenny that, because of their decision to kill Caitlin together, they will never be able to see each other again. Jenny and Justin wept softly as the sentencing phase of the trial ended.

  23. Epilogue

  24. Tre Romano sunk into the green couch in his living room. He loosened his tie and exhaled slowly. His wife’s trial had been long and emotional. Everyone had hugged him after the verdict and told them that they were there to help get through this tragic event. Everyone felt sorry for poor Tre Romano. They didn’t know how happy he was inside. His wife had been cheating on him with a man that he couldn’t stand. Now, they were both going to be locked up forever. He heard his beloved white poodle, Poopsie, scratching at the back door, begging to be let out. Rolling his eyes, he got up and walked to the back door. He grabbed the leash laying on the counter next to Jenny’s hairbrush, hooked it on to the dog’s collar, unlocked the door, and slipped on his size 10 Adidas sandals. Smiling, he walked out into the sunny backyard.
