  1. BYU Family history library EQUIPMENT BASICS

  2. We are going to learn about…

  3. During this presentation you will be asked to evaluate your competency using the Library equipment . When asked to do so, just put a check mark () on your survey sheet by the items you personally feel you need help with.

  4. The Computers THE DESKTOP: The main screen of every computer is called the desktop. Located on the desktop are all the major programs you will need. They consist of “shortcuts” or icons that link to a program or file located at another place on the computer and make access much easier. The toolbar at the bottom of the screen includes the “Start” menu on the left. The bars following the “Start” button show the programs which are presently running on that computer.

ACCESSING THE INTERNET: • On the desktop is an icon with a blue on it. • This icon is a link to Internet Explorer, which is an internet browser. • This icon will help you access the worldwide web. • After opening the internet on a lab computer, the BYU Family History Library homepage will open. e

  6. The FHL Homepage This page contains Library information and links to other websites. The icons in the column on the right provide quick access to the most commonly-used data bases.

  7. Commonly-usedData Bases Clicking on one of these icons will take you directly to the data base. Note: “Blue Binders” has been added to this list. Students are currently digitizing all of the information in the Blue Binders and that information will be added to this link as they are completed.

  8. Library Catalogs on the Computer Online, there are 2 library catalogs that contain information about resources available for genealogists. 1. The Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) Library Catalog. This catalog identifies ALL of BYU’s books, maps, records, films, etc. 2. The Family History Library Catalog – Salt Lake City. This catalog identifies ALL of the books, films, fiche, etc., in the Salt Lake Family History Library.

  10. Microfilm/Microfiche Readers We have many microfilm readers. They are for the sole purpose of reading a microfilm and are gradually being replaced by state-of-the-art digital readers/scanners. Microfilm readers are fairly simple to use and there are instructions printed on each reader. We have four microfiche readers. They too will eventually be replaced by the newer digital readers/scanners. Instructions for their use is in the purple binder accompanying this lesson.

  12. ScanPro Digital Scanners These machines are both faster and easier to use than the older readers and scanners, and they require only minimal training. On the scanner’s computer desktop is an icon for the “Image Data” program, which will access the scanner and allow you to move the film, zoom, scan, etc. Further in-depth instruction is available next to the scanner.

  14. Flatbed Scanners • The Cannon Flatbed Scanner is the simplest to use. It has easy access, will scan several pictures, and uses a program such as “Picasa 2.” • 2. The HP Flatbed Scanner is very user-friendly. What makes • it unique is its OCR or “Optical Character Recognition” capability. 3. The Microtek Picture Film/Slide Scanner is used primarily for scanning slides, picture film, and other transparent images. 4. The Microtek Large Flatbed Scanner (or “Stormtrooper”) has a large scanning area and a good OCR program.

  16. Printers The large gray laser printer is the one that prints most documents here at the Library. It is the default printer for the computers. When choosing to print a document, enter your information on the “Print Job Details” screen, swipe your BYU card, on the touch screen, and select your print job. Your copies will be printed at the corresponding printer. Color prints and large prints are also available but require a separate printer.

  18. Copy Machine • The copy machine is located behind the column to the northwest of the student desk. To pay for copies, you can use a card or bills and/or coins.

  20. Conference RoomComputer/Projector • Instructions for the laptop and the projector are located on the console. This is excellent equipment to use for presentations such as this PowerPoint training on “Library Equipment.”

As you improve on a skill, let your Shift Leader know.
