Education 1833 Oberlin College(Ohio) allows women to enroll 1870 20% college students are women 1915 women allowed into American Medical Association Today 56% college students are women Employment “Caring Industry” teachers and nurses New industry attracts women, especially garment Less pay than men for same job Business caters to new workers with advertisements and female journalists Women get Progressive: Late 1800’s new opportunities emerged for women in education and employment

Gaining political experience Women are major players in Progressive movement Lillian Wald founds Henry Street Settlement in NY Led to Federal Children’s Bureau Can’t I get a drink here…Prohibition Prohibition-ban on making, selling, and distributing alcohol Women’s Christian Temperence Union WCTU and evangelist Billy Sunday campaign against the evils of alcohol I am woman…hear me roar

Carrie Nation and her Hatchet • Carrie Nation smashes saloons all across the nation, gaining notoriety as a crusader against alcohol • Prohibition is ratified (1919) in the 18th amendment…it proves so unpopular, it is repealed in 1933 by the 21st amendment "I want you to quit fooling and let me out of jail. If you cause me to miss my engagements, I won't feel like a ministering angel unto you." She added, "It is time for you to recover yourself before the devil, your master, makes a clean sweep with you into hell."

  5. Women’s Suffrage • Susan B. Anthony formed the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869 • Susan B. Anthony worked to give women the constitutional right to vote • Supreme Court rules that women are citizens, but cannot vote • “Failure is impossible” • 1920 the 19th amendment is passed and voters cannot be discriminated by sex

  10. Environmental Conservation • Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot push for natural resources to be conserved…Conservation is born • Roosevelt establishes U.S. Forest Service • 150 million acres in national forests, now there are 193 million acres protected
