  1. Community 'horrified' by gang rapist's release The release of a prisoner who was convicted of gang rape eight years ago has been condemned by the New South Wales opposition. The man, known only as MRK, was convicted of raping two teenage girls with his three brothers in Ashfield, in Sydney's inner-west. He was given a maximum sentence of 10 years but will be released from jail on May 18 after a decision by the New South Wales State Parole Authority. Both the Corrective Services Commissioner and State Government strongly objected to him being granted parole. Shadow attorney-general Greg Smith says the parole authority's decision needs to be reviewed. "I think they owe that to the community," he said. "The community is horrified. The public reaction has been one of shock and I think the government has a duty to take that into account and make sure that there's not some sort of appellable error." The Parole Authority says all proper procedures were followed in its decision to release MRK. A spokesman says the serious offenders review council recommended the prisoner's release. He says MRK will be subject to strict parole conditions.
