  2. Introduction • Ever been accused of something you didn’t do? • Someone ever taken blame for something you did? • Someone ever taken punishment for what you’ve done wrong? • Setting for today’s lesson • Jesus and disciples just finished Passover meal • Dark outside

  3. Jesus in Gethsemane • Mark 14:32-36 • Jesus was God and man • Knew terrible suffering He would face • Suffering necessary to save His people • What brought the most grief to Jesus? • Mark 14:37-42

  4. Jesus was betrayed and arrested • Mark 14:43-46 • Judas and arresting soldiers guided by Satan • Mark 14:47-49 • Jesus knew that everything foretold about Him must happen as written

  5. Disciples fled • Mark 14:50-52 • Disciples ran away, just as Jesus had predicted • They were afraid, disappointed, confused • Didn’t understand how Jesus could be Saviour if He were killed by enemies • Didn’t understand how His death could deliver them

  6. Jesus tried by Jewish leaders • Mark 14:53-54 • Peter was afraid too, followed at distance • Mark 14:55 • Jesus stood before Sanhedrin • Hadn’t done anything wrong • Couldn’t find any lawful reason to condemn Him • Mark 14:56-59 • Prophets predicted false witnesses against Him • Psalm 27:12

Jesus tried by Jewish leaders (cont.) • Mark 14:60-62 • Jesus was quiet when they lied, wouldn’t answer • trusting God, trusting God’s plan • When asked if He was the Christ, He spoke • “I AM” – Exodus 3:14 • Jewish leaders recognized this phrase, “I AM” • Jesus’ first visit • Saviour • Jesus’ return • Seated at the right hand of His Father

  8. Jesus tried by Jewish leaders(cont.) • Mark 14:63-64 • Ripped clothes – showed their anger • Angry because Jesus said He was equal with God • Mark 14:65 • Prophets predicted this: Isaiah 50:6 • Written 700 years earlier

Jesus tried by Pilate • Mark 15:1 • Jews couldn’t kill anyone without permission from Roman rulers • Caesar appointed Pilate as governor of Judea and Samaria • Jewish leaders took Jesus to Pilate, hoping to sentence Him to death • Mark 15:2 • Descendant of David, King of the Jews • Mark 15:3-5 • Did not open His mouth when falsely accused • Isaiah 53:7

  10. Barabbas or Jesus? • Mark 15:6-11 • Custom was to release one prisoner at the feast • Pilate knew Jesus hadn’t done anything wrong • Pilate hoped Jews would want Jesus to go free instead of Barabbas (a murderer)

  11. Jewish leaders wanted Jesus crucified • Mark 15:12-14 • Crucifixion used for worst criminals • Prisoner died slowly, in agony • Isaiah 53:3 • Prophets predicted this • Mark 15:10 • Rejected by Jews

Jesus was whipped and mocked • Mark 15:15 • Many lashes of leather • Sharp metal and bone tied in • Prisoner tied down with arms outstreched • Whip laid open the skin • Some prisoners died from the scourging • Mark 15:16-19 • Soldiers mocked • Purple robe • Crown of thorns • Thorns – the curse of the fall

  13. Conclusion • Jesus was suffering for you and me • For the things we’ve done • He was suffering terribly, but didn’t complain • He did it for me – for my sins • He did it for you – for your sins
