  2. What Is This Training? • Introductory and refresher course on Day Camp operations for leaders • First Session, 8:30am-9:30am: General training and Day Camp Guidelines • Youth Protection, 9:30am – 10:00am • Second Session, 10:20-11:15pm: Area Specific Training

  3. When And What Is Camp? Bogue Tuchenna District DAY CAMP 2014 • Week 1 – June 2-6 • Week 2 – June 9-13 • Five days of fun and learning activities: • Waterfront Activities (Water Slides, Canoes, Swimming, and Rope Swings) • Shooting Sports (BB Guns, Archery, and Sling Shots) • Skills (Woodworking, Crafts, Belt Loops and Scoutcraft) • Nature and Special Webelos Activities

  4. What Are The Important Dates? May 17th – Swim Check – 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM May 17th – T-shirt Pick Up – 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM May 31st– Day Camp Set Up – 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM June 13th– Day Camp Tear Down – 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM @ Five Lakes Campground

  8. Why Am I Volunteering? • It’s FUNand YOU ARE NEEDED • The camp is held with the assistance of volunteers such as yourself. Without the assistance of large numbers of parents, camp would not occur. • For example, each den of ten to twelve boys needs adults to supervise them. • Each program activity (such as crafts, skills, or games) needs adults to staff it. • Shooting Sports requires a minimum of six adults be staffed. • Waterfront requires 1 adult for each 10 scouts.

  9. What Camp Times Should I Know And Commit to Memory? • 8:00AM – YOUhave arrived and signed in at HQ • 8:15AM – Car line begins • 8:30AM – Camp begins • 8:45AM to 3:15PM – Activities • 3:30PM – Closing Flag Ceremony • 3:45PM – Camp ends, car line pickup • 4:00PM – Camp is officially closed

How Do I Setup My Den Area? • Den Leaders should setup a canopy as a den area • All canopies should placed along “Den Row” • Week 1 setup is May 31st after camp is set up • Week 2 setup day is June 7thor 8th • An ice chest is helpful to store lunches • Camp will not supply ice to dens • A tarp is a good idea too

  11. How Do We Get There? • Scout transportation is the responsibility of the parents. • For directions, go to http://btbsa.org/summer-daycamp-planning.html • Waterfront volunteers can park in the back but must arrive before 7:45AM. The cars can’t be moved until camp is dismissed.

Where Do I NOTPark? • Do not park immediately behind the bathrooms (there is a septic tank there). • Do not park in the field in front of headquarters. • Do not park past the cones / barricades along Den Row and by Gators. • Do not park in the gravel road across the street from camp. • Do not park in the grass driveway near the house across the street from camp.

  13. How Do I Prepare? • Let your scout parents know what to send with the scout and what to leave at home • Scouts should not carry any medicine with them. Exceptions are inhalers and epi-pens. All medications should be checked in with the Camp Nurse. • Stress that all campers must wear the Day Camp Activity Uniform. This consists of the Day Camp T-Shirt, closed toed shoes, shorts/swimsuit, a cup on a lanyard and camp name tag. • Please put sunscreen on everyone before the start of camp. • Ask parents to label everything they send with their child.

  14. What Do Scouts Bring To Camp? • Day Camp T-Shirt • Swim Trunks • Closed Toe Shoes (Socks should be worn with shoes unless they are Crocs or similar shoes) • Swim Shoes (Crocs are not swim shoes) • Towel • Waterproof Sunscreen • Non-Perishable Lunch • Cup with String or Hook for water

  15. What Do Gators Bring to Camp? • Day Camp T-Shirt • Swim Trunks (boys) • One Piece Swimsuit w/shorts (girls) • Closed Toe Shoes • Socks • Swim Shoes • Towel • Waterproof Sunscreen • Non-Perishable Lunch • Cup with String or Hook for water

What Do Boy Scout and JuniorVolunteers Bring? • Day Camp T-Shirt (2+ days) • Name Tag and Arm Band(<2 days, get at check-in) • Swim Trunks or Shorts • One Piece Swimsuit w/shorts (girls) • Closed Toe Shoes • Socks • Swim Shoes • Towel • Waterproof Sunscreen • Non-Perishable Lunch • Cup with String or Hook for water

What Do I Need to Bring to Camp? • Day Camp T-Shirt (2+ days) • Name Tag and Arm Band(<2 days, get at check-in) • Swim Trunks or Shorts (Male) • One Piece Swimsuit or Shorts and appropriate t-shirt (Female) • Closed Toe Shoes • Socks • Swim Shoes • Towel • Waterproof Sunscreen • Non-Perishable Lunch • Cup with String or Hook for water

  18. What Should NOTBe Brought? • Swim goggles • Open toed shoes • Aerosol sprays of any kind • Knives of any kind • Pets / Animals • Walkie-Talkies or Two-way Radios • Tobacco • Alcohol • Electronic devices (iPODs, iPads, Gameboys, Radios, CD Players, etc.) • Toys and Trading Cards • BAD ATTITUDES! Nothing you can’t lose or live without!

How Do I Get The Day Started? • Sign in at HQ (Scout House) • Den leaders pick up den bags and go to den tent • Area volunteers should go to assigned area immediately after sign in • Den leaders fill out attendance sheet as scouts arrive • Lead den to the flag pole on time • Turn in attendance sheet at HQ after flag pole

  20. What Do I Do During The Day? • Den Leaders lead the dens to areas and assist the scouts with the activity • Stay on time • Area volunteers prepare the area for each incoming group • Any medical issue should be sent to the camp nurse • Stress the buddy system • Assist Area Volunteers so all campers can finish the skill or task • Follow the directions of all Aquatics and Shooting Sports staff

  21. Why Do I Have Beads In My Den Bag? • Scouts must drink water at each station. Dehydration is one of our biggest problems • There will be coolers with ice water on den row and around camp • Each bag will have blue and yellow beads • Blue beads are given to the scout when they drink a full cup of water • Yellow beads are given for bathroom stops • These beads inspire the campers to stay hydrated and give a visual cue on how much has been drank

  22. How Do I Deal With Issues? • Child safety is always the top priority • Most difficulties can be handled at the den level. The principles to follow are: • Be fair • Be consistent • Treat each boy as an individual • Set limits, explain them, and stick to them • Take action quickly

  23. More Issues… • Our disciplinary system has three levels: • Den Leader • Camp Director • District Executive • Discipline is meant as a corrective, not punitive measure. • Corporal punishment has no place in our program and will not be tolerated. • Abuse of staff (including willful refusal to obey) will also not be tolerated and campers who will not follow instructions will be sent home and may be barred from attendance for the remainder of camp.

  24. …And • If a boy refuses to accept the den rules, he will be referred to the Camp Director. • The Camp Director will discuss the situation with the boy and offer him the opportunity to decide whether he is willing to accept the rules -- this opportunity may last for an extended period. • If the boy continues to refuse to accept Camp and Den rules, his parents may be asked to come and get him. • If, after consulting with his parents, the Camp Director and the District Executive believe it is in the best interest of the boy and the Camp, the parents will be requested to keep their son at home for the remainder of the Camp.

  25. How Does The Day End? • After the last session, go back to your den tent • Have the scouts collect their towels and other things to go home. Swim shoes can be left at camp and their buckets stay at camp. • Bring your trash to the front and put in the dumpster. • Everyone is to head to the flag pole. Camp is dismissed after the flag ceremony. • Car line begins after camp is dismissed from flag pole. • Den leaders are responsible for their den. You must remain until all campers are picked up. • After car line is complete, any remaining campers should be dropped off at headquarters. • Go home and rest, tomorrow is another day…
