Transition Night. A Preview to Second Grade. Purpose. Our goal this evening is to give you an introduction to Second Grade curriculum, academic expectations, and how to prepare your child for second grade over the summer. Math - Know common math facts fluently and work towards automaticity.

  1. Transition Night A Preview to Second Grade

  2. Purpose Our goal this evening is to give you an introduction to Second Grade curriculum, academic expectations, and how to prepare your child for second grade over the summer.

  3. Math - Know common math facts fluently and work towards automaticity. Beginning of year: • Addition up to 20 • Subtraction from 20 • +1 facts • +2 facts • -1 facts • -2 facts Middle of Year • Doubles facts • +9s • +10s • -10s • +10s and -10s from other numbers (ex. 23 +10) End of Year • +9s (2-digit numbers) • +groups of 10s

  4. Math – Place Value Students will develop a sense of place value during second grade. The goal is understand what each of the digits represent and then to use that to solve problems. This is a critical foundation to learning addition and subtraction. Students are to understand numbers up to 1,200. 2 tens and 3 ones 20 + 3 23

  5. Math – Other Concepts Problem Solving Number Patterns Fractions Measurement 3D Shapes 2D Shapes Graphing

  6. Math – Continuous Concepts • Time • Money • Justifying math thinking with models, representations, manipulatives, and words.

  7. Language Arts - Reading In Second Grade, students strengthen their decoding skills and build deeper comprehension skills while reading. Students will look at a variety of genres including: fantasy, poetry, informational, and traditional literature. Your child will have more ownership of the books they read. They will use this as a guideline to help them when selecting their books. Just Right Book I know most of the words I can read on my own Using my reading strategies and skills I have some BK on the topic 2 – 4 words per page are tricky or I have to sound them out I understand what I am reading

  8. Language Arts – Reading Levels • Beginning of Year expectation is a • Level I/16. These stories have easily decodable text and a simple story line. There is usually one or two characters and a clear problem and solution.

  9. Language Arts – Reading Levels • End of Year expectation is a Level M/28. These stories have more specific vocabulary and a multiple characters. There is more detail added to the story.

  10. Language Arts –Reading • Your child will have weekly guided reading groups or small group instruction. These groups are based on similar levels, similar skills sets, or needed skills. Groups change as needed. • Small group instruction typically begins in the 2nd Six weeks after beginning of year routines are established.

  11. Writing In 2nd Grade your child will be learning to write personal narratives as well as expository or non-fiction pieces. Your child will be expected to revise their story by adding details such as what they were thinking or feeling at the time and dialogue. They will also edit their stories for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Ways to help this summer: Have your child keep a journal of exciting experiences. Help them to check their story for correct capitalization and punctuation.

  14. Work Habits Expectations of independence and responsibility are higher in Second Grade. We work to build this through out the year. For instance, at the beginning of the year we read most all assignments aloud to students and then move to the students reading independently. Students are expected to do higher quality work at a more fluent pace. Rubrics are frequently used so that students can self assess or peer assess work.

  15. Ways to Help Over the Summer Reading Math • Read, read, read • Practice independently reading EVERYDAY! • Have them practice talking to you about their book. *See handout Questions to Ask Your Child. • Board Games (totaling dice or counting money) • Math facts! Addition and Subtraction!
