The Teen Brain • The front area of the brain is where advance cognition is developed • Imagination • Abstract thought • Judgment of consequences • Planning • Controlling impulses • The front of the brain matures in the early 20’s cognitive functions shift from areas of the brain associated with impulse and aggression.

  3. Task of Adolescence Teen Relationship Behavior May not be able to recognize that they’re in an unhealthy relationship. They often get confused and might their partner’s controlling behavior as care or affection • Accept changing body image • Develop a personal value system • Prepare for a productive role in society • Develop an adult identity

  4. Types of Relationships • Friendships (Peers) • . A friend is defined as a person you know well and regard with affection, trust and respect. As you get older, some of your friendships will start to change, and some may grow deeper. You might also begin to know many more people, although not all of them will be your close friends. • Families • Family is defined as a domestic group of people with some degree of kinship, whether through blood, marriage or adoption. Ideally each child is nurtured and respected and grows up to care for others and develop strong and healthy relationships • Romantic • An intimate relationship is one in which you can truly be yourself with someone who you respect and are respected by in return. It is an emotional connection that can also be physical. It does not have to be in the context of a romantic or sexual relationship.

  5. Family Relationships • If the relationships with family members are healthy, a child learns love, respect, and get along with others, and to function as part of a group • Families share traditions, values, and views on relationships of its cultural group

Family Relationship continued • Factors in the American family • More women in the work force • Half of women with preschool children are in the work force • Need two incomes • Wants to continue their career • High divorce rate • “no fault” divorce • Neither person is blamed and amicable separation • Increase in age at which people marry • Smaller families (two or none children)

  9. Types of Friendships • Some friendships are casual and some are close. Some are with friends of the opposite sex. • Casual Friends • Same school, neighborhood, or common interests • Close Friends • Similar goals, values, or interests • Friends of the opposite sex • Gender roles (activity)

Dating Relationships • Infatuation • Feelings of intense attraction to another person • Dating • Time you spend together • Group Dating • Group activities for both males and females • Couple Dating • Group activities that you discover that especially enjoy a certain friend. • Steady Dating • Exclusive dating , and see each other on a regular basis
