    1. Welcome to Coeburn High School August 2008 Four years that you will never forget.

    2. Your freshman year will be a time of adapting to a new educational and social environment. The purpose of this meeting is to explain and plan an effective program of study to enable you to be successful in this year of transition. The ultimate goal of Coeburn High School is to make sure that each student is successful.

    3. The transition from 8th to 9th grade is thought to be the most difficult educational transition that a student makes from the K through 12 years.

    4. Factors that affect 9th graders in transition: Larger Building getting to class on time, finding lockers, getting lost & crowded hallways Social Adjustments making new friends Academic Adjustments block scheduling, time management, organizational skills, homework, graduation requirements, verified credits & SOLS Involvement in extra-curricular activities Attendance, focus and participation

    5. Students will receive a Student Handbook by mail this summer. We ask that each family review the booklet to become familiar with the contents. The handbook contains the following sections: Introduction Schedules Student Guidelines Discipline Curriculum Extra-Curricular Activities Fire Drill (Evacuation) Procedures

    6. In addition to the Student Handbook, the student will also receive a letter from the administrative staff, student schedule, designated days for schedule adjustments (if needed), locker number and combination. THE FRESHMEN ORIENTATION DATE & TIME WILL BE INCLUDED.

    10. Athletic Participation Any student entering the 9th grade for the first time may participate in high school athletics for the first semester regardless of the academic performance at the 8th grade level. Virginia High School League Requirements: A student must pass three (3) subjects at the end of the first semester in high school for VHSL eligibility for the 2nd semester and earn a passing grade in three subjects for the end of the year to play the first semester of the following year.
