  1. Flow Accelerating Wind Tower PATENTED BY: Pedro Marrero O´Shanahan MANUFACTURER: Aerogeneradores Canarios S.A.

  2. TheWind Wind energy is a by-product of solar energy with an annual power potential between 2·1015 and 5·1015 kWh. This huge amount of energy can be captured by wind mills.

  3. Wind Mills Wind mills take wind energy and convert it into: - mechanical energy (to grind, pump water, etc) - electrical power (actual wind turbines) Mill Pumping water Electric power

  4. Historical Evolution of Wind Mills Conceptually they have not evolved in thousands of years. They have only adapted their components to the global technological development. In the past:Actually: •Masonry or wood towers. •Steel towers. High technology paint. •Wood and canvas rotor blades. •Composite structures rotor blades. •Wood mechanisms and gears. •Steel mechanisms and gear. •Manual control and yaw. •Computer control. •Mechanical energy was obtained. •Electric energy is obtained. •Low power units. •Great power units. •They were called wind mills. •They are called wind turbines.

  5. Historical Evolution of Wind Mills BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT FACT IS ..... - BEFORE wind energy was captured in its natural state, and was kept unmodified. - NOW it´s the same, wind energy is captured in its natural state, and is kept unmodified. In thousands of years, there has not been major changes in the way to capture this energy.

  6. Historical Evolution of Wind Mills To sum up, wind mills have been stylised and modernized by applying new technologies and materials, although the basic concept has not changed. There has been only an evolution of components, materials, technologies, electronic, etc.

  7. Flow Accelerating Wind Tower. An Innovating Concept. The Flow Accelerating Wind Tower DOES NOT USE WIND IN ITS NATURAL STATE, BUT IT ACTS ON WIND BY ACCELERATING IT, This is a new concept in wind turbine design and the way to obtain power.

  8. How can we do it? In a very simple way by the application of one of the principles of fluid mechanics. In a tube, where the caudal is constant, this is to be hold: Q=Caudal S=Section of the tube V=Speed of the fluid Q = S1· v1 = s2·V2 Therefore, if the section decreases the speed must increase proportionally.

  9. Representation Caudal stays constant along the tube. Q = S1· v1 = s2·V2= Ct. Q = S2•V2 Q = S1• V1

  10. What can we obtain from this? An important increase of the energy taken by the wind turbine, proportional to the cube of the speed, according to: So, decreasing the section of the tube to a half means that speed is doubled, the unitarian energy is multiplied by 8 and the resulting energy is multiplied by 4: S1·V1 = S2·V2 E E S1·V1= s2·V2

  11. Application of these Principles to the Flow Accelerating Wind Tower V2 V1

  12. Resulting Advantages •Technical advantages. •Economic advantages. •Building advantages. •Environmental advantages. •Social advantages. •Functional advantages.

  13. Resulting Advantages •Technical advantages: Greater energy collection. Better efficiency. Usage in low wind potential areas.

  14. Resulting Advantages •Economic Advantages: There is a cheaper manufacturing. We obtain cheaper energy. It can be used in actual non profitable and thus cheaper lands. It can also be used in industrial areas that are too expensive for this kind of traditional installations, because it would be possible to locate a industrial plant inside.

  15. Resulting Advantages •Building Advantages: Smaller size of the wind turbine. Smaller size of the rotor. The tower loses its traditional structural concept, and is transformed itself into an industrial building with an usable space inside.

  16. Resulting Advantages •Environmental Advantages: Less noise pollution. Less visual impact, because mobile parts are not shown. Less dangerous for birds.

  17. Resulting Advantages •Social Advantages: Land speculation is avoided as all kind of lands can be used, not only high wind potential areas. We obtain usable spaces inside the structure that can be used for social equipments or so.

  18. Resulting Advantages •Functional Advantages: Possibility to increase the installed power by adding more tubes on the supporting structure. Power x 3 Power x 1 Power x 2
