Type 2 Diabetes • This is a lifelong disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. • We normally refer to the “sugar” in our blood as glucose.
Symptoms • Many people don’t start out with symptoms, they occur over years. • If you were to get early symptoms, they would be something like: • Infections that develop more frequently and take more time to heal • Fatigue • Hunger • Increased thirst and urination • Blurred vision • Pain or numbness in hands or feet
Causes • Diabetes is caused by a problem in the way your body makes or uses insulin. • Usually type 2 diabetes occurs over time. • Normally, people with this disease are overweight. But it can develop in thin people, but they’re usually older.
How do you prevent Type 2 diabetes? • Reach and maintain a reasonable body weight. • Make good food choices. • Be physically active. • Control blood pressure and cholesterol.
Treatment • Unfortunately, there is no cure or treatment for this disease. • You can’t get rid of the disease.
