  2. Elizabeth Griscom was born in 1752 January 1, she was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Betsy had 16 siblings. Not all of them live to be adult. Betsy was one of the older siblings. She had lot of responsibilities.

  3. 1774 When Betsy got older she got better at sewing, and once helped John with a difficult piece of sewing. That is when they fell in love and got married. John Ross died in 1776. When John died in an explosion, George Washington came up to Betsy’s door and asked her to make a flag to represent America. She said yes. George Washington thought that Betsy was very good at sewing. That is why she was chosen to make the first flag.

  4. Betsy’s second husband was Joseph Ashburn. Betsy had her first child named Zilla. When Joseph left to fight in the war Betsy had her second child Eliza. When Joseph’s ship returned he was not on the ship, he died in the war.

  5. After Josephs death, Betsy married John Claypoole and they happy with there two little daughters.

  6. A couple years after John and Betsy got married, Betsy had two more kids! On April 3 1785 baby Clarissa was born! That was Betsy third child. One year later on November 15,1786 another child named Susan was born.

  7. The Claypooles moved into a bigger home on Second Street. Unfortunately, Zilla, Betsy’s oldest daughter, had died. Betsy again had two more kids named Rachel and Jane were born.

  8. In 1783 yellow fever swept through Philadelphia. More people left the city to avoid becoming sick. Betsy’s family was lucky they did not get yellow fever. Betsy died in 1836 January 30, in Philadelphia.
