Red Scare • Fear of “internal subversion” by Communists became a political issue • Factors that led to the Red Scare • George Kennan • Containment • Fall of China • Communists win the revolution despite US aid to the Nationalists • Korean War
Government Action • Republicans are accused of being “soft on Communism” • Loyalty oaths are demanded from government employees • HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) • Congressional committee that interviewed people who were suspected Communists • Went after people in Hollywood • Most cooperated • A group that became known as the “Hollywood Ten” did not, cited first amendment rights. • This led to blacklisting, where people accused couldn’t get a job.
Spy & Treason Controversies • Alger Hiss • Former State Department official accused of treason • Denied accusations but was caught in a lie when being interviewed by HUAC member Richard Nixon • Convicted of perjury • Klaus Fuchs • British citizen convicted of atomic espionage • Julius & Ethel Rosenberg • Conviction of Fuchs led to accusations of the Rosenbergs • Tried and executed for treason despite many people who protested the decision.
The Rise of McCarthyism • Joe McCarthy • Senator from Wisconsin • Staunch anti-Communist • Exploits America’s fear of Communism for political gain • Claimed to have 205 “card carrying members” of the Communist Party • Many government employees were accused and interviewed • Cost many people their careers • No one was ever found to be actual members of the Communist Party • Eventually McCarthy was censured by Congress and died of alcoholism.
