Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: [Associated Devices Information Element and Faster Association] Date Submitted: [17 March, 2004] Source: [Sunil Jogi, Prashant Wason, Balaji Holur, Manoj Choudhary (presenter), Wonyong Yoon, Yongsuk Kim] Company [Samsung India Software Operations/Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology] Address [No. 3/1, JP Techno Parks, Millers Road, Bangalore, INDIA - 560052] Voice:[91-80-51197777ext:5000], FAX: [91-80-51148855], E-Mail:[manojc@samsung.com] Re: [IEEE 802.15.3/D17] Abstract: [The document suggests inclusion of an Associated Devices Information Element in the beacon frame and a faster association procedure for 802.15.3 draft.] Purpose: [For discussion to add an Associated Devices Information Element in the beacon frame and a faster association procedure in 802.15.3 draft.] Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. 2. Associated Devices Information Element and Faster Association 17 March, 2004 Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  3. Abstract • We propose an Associated Devices Information Element (ADIE) in the beacon frame that conveys association status of all devices (DEVIDs) in the piconet. • We propose a faster association procedure using Associated Devices Information Element (ADIE). • The proposed Associated Devices Information Element (ADIE) may be used for some other purposes also. Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  4. Agenda • Current Solution • Problems with Current Solution • Proposed Solution • Summary Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  5. Current Solution (1) • Beacon frame • There is a clerical error in the draft diagram (L1 is shown as Lm) • Beacon is sent by PNC at the start of all the superframes • Beacon contains different Information Elements (IEs). • Details about beacon frame: Reference Section 7.3.1 in Draft P802.15.3/D17, February 2003 Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  6. Current Solution (2) • These IEs are encoded in type, length, value format. The IEs in the beacon payload may appear in any order except for the channel time allocation (CTA) IEs • Element IDs 0x00 to 0x0F: Already assigned • Element IDs 0x10 to 0x7F: Reserved • Element IDs 0x80 to 0xFF: Vendor specific • Details about Element IDs: Reference Table 48 in Draft P802.15.3/D17, February 2003 • Details about Information Elements: Reference Section 7.4 in Draft P802.15.3/D17, February 2003 Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  7. Current Association Procedure (Reference Section 8.3.1 in Draft P802.15.3/D17, February 2003) Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  8. Problems with Current Solution • Longer and centralized association procedure • New node (trying to join) does not have information about associated nodes in the piconet and their DEVIDs Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  9. Proposed Solution • Associated Devices Information Element (ADIE) • Purpose of this IE is to provide the information about all associated devices in beacon • Element ID of ADIE is 0x10 (Which is taken from reserved pool of Element IDs). • Details about Element IDs: Reference Table 48 in Draft P802.15.3/D17, February 2003 Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  10. Format of Associated Devices IE (ADIE) Total Length of ADIE (bytes) = ((2 ^ Length of DEVID field in bits) / 8) + Size of Length field + Size of Element ID field = ((2 ^ 8) / 8) + 1 + 1 = 34 Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  11. Proposed beacon with ADIE Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  12. Proposed Association Procedure • By using ADIE, new DEV can find out unused DEVIDs. • New DEV can choose a random DEVID from the unused DEVIDs and should propose it as its DEVID to PNC. • So, Association Response can be a directed message, which is broadcast in current specification. Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  13. Proposed Association Procedure MSC Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT

  14. Summary • We propose an Associated Devices Information Element (ADIE) in the beacon frame that can tell about all associated devices and their DEVIDs in the piconet. • We propose a decentralized and faster association procedure using Associated Devices Information Element (ADIE). • The proposed Associated Devices Information Element (ADIE) may be used for some other purposes also like routing extensibility. Manoj Choudhary, SISO/SAIT
